Abstract

Abstract A disposable diaper (10) comprising an absorbent core (14) that is encased between a liquid pervious topsheet (12) and a liquid impervious (16) backsheet, elasticized leg openings, and a fastening device (52) for securing the diaper on a wearer. The fastening device (52) comprises a first member (53) having a plurality of fiber elements (62) and a second member (54) having a plurality of engaging elements (74) that are mechanically engageable with the fiber elements (62) of the first member (53). The engaging elements are disposed and manufactured so as to provide a fastening device that is capable of resisting the peel forces and shear stress that are encountered during use and that is comfortable and skin friendly for the wearer. Each of the engaging elements (74) thus preferably comprises a stem (76) and an enlarged head (78) positioned on one end of the stem; the head (78) having a smooth, generally convex top surface that provides a skin friendly second member and a bottom surface that extends radially outwardly from the stem to engage the fiber elements of the first member. The fiber elements (62) of the first member (53) and the engaging elements (74) of the second member (54) are configured to maximize peel resistance such that the fastening device (52) has a fiber overhang ratio of at least about 2:1 and a height ratio of at least about 5:1.

A disposable diaper (10) comprising: a liquid pervious topsheet (12); a liquid impervious backsheet (16), said backsheet being affixed to said topsheet (12); an absorbent core (14) for absorbing liquids, said absorbent core being encased between said topsheet (12) and said backsheet (16); a longitudinal marginal portion (50) adjacent each longitudinal side (26,28) of the disposable diaper; an elastic member (18) operatively associated with each of said longitudinal marginal portions (50); a first waist portion (42) at one end (22) of the disposable diaper (10); a second waist portion (44) at the opposite end (24) of the disposable diaper; and a fastening device (52) for maintaining said first waist portion (42) and said second waist portion (44) in an overlapping configuration during use, characterised in that said fastening device (52) comprises a first member (53) comprising a plurality of fiber elements (62,64); and a second member (54) engageable with said fiber elements (62,64) of said first member (53), said second member comprising: a) a base (68), preferably being flexible, having a first surface (70) and a second surface (72), and b) a plurality of engaging elements (74) extending from said first surface (70) of said base (68), each of said engaging elements (74) comprising i) a stem (76) supported at one end thereof on said base (68), and ii) an enlarged head (78)positioned at the end of said stem (76) opposite said base (68), said head (78) having a smooth, generally convex, preferably semi-spherical, top surface (80) and a bottom surface (82) extending radially outwardly from said stem (76) along at least two radii, preferably each radius, of said stem to the periphery (84) of said top surface (80), said bottom surface (82) being adapted to be engaged by at least one of said fiber elements (62,64). wherein the fiber overhang ratio of said fastening device (52) is at least 2:1, preferably 3:1, and the height ratio is at least about 5:1, preferably 7:1.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 66 words
A disposable diaper of Claim 1 wherein said fastening device (52) additionally comprises a fastening tape (55) secured on each longitudinal side (26,28) of the diaper on said first waist portion (42), each of said fastening tapes (55) having a manufacturer's and a user's end (56,58) and wherein said second member (54) is positioned on said user's end (58) of each of said fastening tapes (55).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 47 words
A disposable diaper according to either one of claims 1 and 2 wherein said first member (53) is secured to the outside of said second waist portion (44) and said second member (54) is secured to the inside of each side of said first waist portion (42).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
A disposable diaper according to any of the preceding claims wherein said engaging elements (74) are disposed relative to said base (68) at an angle of between 30° and 90°, preferably between 45° and 75°.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A disposable diaper according to any of the preceding claims wherein said fastening device (52) has a stem overhang ratio of at least about 0.1:1.
