Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for plotting and cutting large scale text in sheet materials for signs and the like includes a movable support for moving the sheet material (M) in one coordinate direction with a rotatable feed roller (20) and a tool carriage (12) being movable relative to the roller (20). Cutting and plotting tools are interchangeable. A tool support (60) is movable on the tool carriage between an elevated and lowered position and has a tool mount accepting the interchangeable cutting und plotting tools one at a time. A lift motor (68) is mounted on the tool carriage and connected to the support (60) for moving the support and the tool (F) between the elevated and lowered positions. A drive motor is connected with the tool carriage and the support for moving the tool and the sheet material an the feed roller (20) relative to one another. Controls are connected with the drive motor and the lift motor (68) for controlling the tool and sheet material movements during cutting and plotting operations.

An automated sign generator for laying out sign text comprising: a support (20) having a support surface for holding sheet material (M) on which sign text is generated in a visually perceptible form; a marking tool (40, 100, 120, 127) engageable with the sheet material on the support surface of the support (20) for marking the contours of text characters on the material; motor controls (80, 86) connected with the support (20) and the marking tool for moving the tool and the sheet material relative to one another to mark text characters on the sheet material; a memory (182) for storing as preprogrammed data a font of text characters of uniform size in terms of strokes, and character spaces whereby the motor controls (80, 86) can produce relative movement of the sheet material and the marking tool in accordance with the preprogrammed data to manifest the characters; keying and storing control (130, 132, 174) connected with the memory for selecting characters from the stored font and composing a sign text for manifestion of the sign by the marking tool on the sheet material; and characterized by an editor (158, 232) for modifying the preprogrammed spacing of selected characters in the composed text of a sign to improve the text appearance in the manifested sign.
