Abstract
Abstract An electronic dictionary for electronic translation of words or compound words in a source language to the corresponding words or compound words in a target language comprises an optical reader (5) which optically reads the source language to be translated, and a translation unit (6-10 and 11) which produces on the basis of the data output from the optical reader (5) output of a target language corresponding to the source language.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
75 words
An electronic dictionary for the electronic translation of words or compound words in a source language to the corresponding words or compound words in a target language, characterized in that the electronics dictionary comprises an optical reader (5,205) which optically reads the source language, and a translation unit (6-10 and 11 or 313) which produces on the basis of the data output from the optical reader output of target language corresponding to the source language.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
34 words
An electronic dictionary according to claim 1 characterised in that there is further provided a display unit (12) for display of the target language produced by the translation unit (6-10 and 11 or 313).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
34 words
An electronic dictionary according to claim 2 characterised in that the optical reader (5,205), the translation unit (6-10 and 11 or 313), and the display unit (12) are provided in a unitary housing (30).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
52 words
An electronic dictionary according to claim 2 characterised in that the translation unit (6-10 and 11 or 313) and the display unit (12) are provided in a unitary housing (35), and the optical reader (5,205) is provided in a scanner (32) connected to the unitary housing (35) by a connector cord (33).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
28 words
An electronic dictionary according to any preceding claim characterised in that there is further provided a printer (13) for printing the target language produced by the translation unit.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
47 words
An electronic dictionary according to claims 3 and 5 characterised in that the printer (13) is included in the unitary housing (30) at a fixed position relative to the optical reader (5,205), whereby the target language is printed at a fixed position relative to the source language.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
46 words
An electronic dictionary according to claims 4 and 5 characterised in that the printer (13) is included in the scanner (32) at a fixed position relative to the optical reader (5,205), whereby the target language is printed at a fixed position relative to the source language.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
45 words
An electronic dictionary according to any preceding claim characterised in that the optical reader (205) optically reads the source language by illuminating the medium (14) containing the source language with light from an external source (205e) and by converting the reflected light into electrical signals.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
29 words
An electronic dictionary according to claim 8 characterised in that the optical reader (205) has a condensor (5b or 231,232,205f) for condensing the light from the external source (205e).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
51 words
An electronic dictionary according to any preceding claim characterised in that the translation unit (6-10,313) identifies, based on output from the optical reader (5,205), variants of the source language and produces output of a target language corresponding to the basic form of the word with has appeared in the variant form.
