Abstract

Abstract An accessory for an injection device of the kind in which liquid is drawn or expelled along a hollow needle 9 comprises a protective sleeve 1 for surrounding the needle 9. The sleeve 1 has at least an end portion 11 which is reciprocable in the direction of the length of the needle 9 between an extended position in which the point of the needle 9 is located within the sleeve 1 to shield the point of the needle 9 and a contracted position in which the point of the needle 9 projects from the sleeve 1, to enable an injection to be effected. A retaining arrangement, making use of a pin 19 located within a hooked portion 22 of a track 20, is provided for retaining the sleeve 1 in the extended position after the injection has been effected and preventing the point of the needle 9 from being exposed solely by application of pressure to the end portion 11 of the sleeve 1 in the direction of contracting movement.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 172 words
An accessory for an injection device of the kind in which liquid is drawn or expelled along a hollow needle (9, 206), the accessory comprising a protective sleeve (1, 208) for surrounding the needle (9, 206) and having at least an end portion (11) which is reciprocable in the direction of the length of the needle (9, 206) between an cxtended position in which the point of the needle (9, 206) is located within the sleeve (1, 208) to shield the point of the needle (9, 206) and a contracted position in which the point of the needle (9, 206) projects from the sleeve (1, 208), to enable an injection to be effected, characterised by retaining means (19, 22; 41, 42; 215, 216) for retaining the sleeve (1, 208) in the extended position after the injection has been effected and preventing the point of the needle (9, 206) from being exposed solely by application of pressure to the end portion (11) of the sleeve (1, 208) in the direction of contracting movement.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 172 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 77 words
An accessory according to Claim 1, characterised in that the sleeve (1, 208) comprises two parts (10, 11; 207, 208) which are reciprocable relative to one another in the direction of the length of the needle (9, 206), one of the parts (10, 207) being adapted for attachment to the injection device and the other part (11, 208) having a portion (17) through which the point of the needle (9, 206) may project in the contracted position.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 75 words
An accessory according to Claim 1, characterised in that the sleeve comprises a sleeve part (208) which is adapted to be attached to a cylindrical part (202) of the injection device such that the two parts (202, 208) are reciprocable relative to one another in the direction of the length of the needle (206), the sleeve part (208) having a portion through which the point of the needle (206) may project in the contracted position.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 68 words
An accessory according to Claim 2 or 3, characterised in that a projection (19, 216) on one part (11, 208) engages within a track (20, 210) in the other part (10, 202), whereby relative movement of the projection (19, 216) within the track (20, 210) between an unlocked position and a locked position occurs as the sleeve (1, 208) moves from its contracted position to its extended position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
An accessory according to Claim 4, characterised in that the retaining means comprises a hooked portion (22) of said track (20) within which said projection (19) is held in the locked position.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 89 words
An accessory according to Claim 4 or 5, characterised in that said track (210) includes a first elongate portion along which the projection (216) travels when the sleeve (208) moves from its initial extended position to its contracted position to enable an injection to be effected, and a second elongate portion along which the projection (216) travels after the injection has been effected when the sleeve (208) subsequently moves from its contracted position to its final extended position in which it is retained by the retaining means (215, 216).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 62 words
An accessory according to any preceding claim, characterised in that the sleeve (1, 208) is resiliently biased towards its extended position, so that the sleeve (1, 208) will automatically assume its extended position shielding the point of the needle (9, 206) on release of pressure applied to the end portion (11) of the sleeve (1, 208) in the direction of contracting movement.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 29 words
An accessory according to any preceding claim, characterised in that it further comprises additional retaining means (19, 21) for retaining the sleeve (1, 208) in a partially contracted position.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 58 words
An accessory according to claim 2 or any one of claims 4 to 8 when appended directly or indirectly to claim 2, characterised in that said one part (207) is coupled to a movable piston (205) of the injection device and is movable with the piston (205) to draw liquid into, and expel liquid from, the injection device.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
An accessory according to any preceding claim, characterised in that a hollow needle (9, 206) is permanently connected to the accessory so as to be surrounded by the sleeve (1, 208).
