Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 2
Claim 1
Independent Claim
118 words
An encoding apparatus comprising: converter means (11) for converting a k-bit input (X₀,....,X₆) to an m-bit output (Y₀,...Y₃), said k-bit input belonging to one of 2 m subsets of a set of 2 k elements, said m-bit output representing said one of 2 m subsets, each of said subsets having 2 k-m elements, the minimum Hamming distance between any of said 2 k-m elements being equal to or greater than a Hamming distance to be achieved, where m is smaller than k; and a convolutional encoder (21,...25; 31,...34; 41) having the last-mentioned Hamming distance and responsive to said k-bit input (X₀,...X₆) and said m-bit output (Y₀,...Y₃) for generating an (n-k)-bit output (Z₀), where n is greater than k.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
87 words
An encoding apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said convolutional encoder comprises: first means (21,...25) for storing the current state of the encoder (D₀,...,D₄), being connected to said converter (11); second means (31,..34) for generating a signal representative of a subsequent state of said encoder, being responsive to the output (Y₀,..,Y₃) of said converter means (11) and the output of said first means; third means (41) generating that (n-k)-bit output (Z₀), being responsive to the output of said first means and to said k-bit input (X₀,...,X₆).
