Abstract

Abstract Pistons for internal combustion engines are described. The pistons comprise a crown component (11) and a skirt component (12) wherein the crown component consists of an iron or nickel based alloy annular portion (13) having fitted directly therein a ceramic insert (14), the crown component being joined to the skirt component by an annular composite laminated member (24) of steel and aluminium alloy the steel of the laminated member being energy beam welded to the annular portion of the crown component and the aluminium alloy of the laminated member being energy beam welded to the skirt component there being after welding a sealed, hollow, annular chamber (31) disposed at the junction between the crown component and the skirt component. Embodiments are described having ceramic inserts of silicon nitride and including combustion bowls.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 121 words
A piston for an internal combustion engine comprising a crown component (11) and a skirt component (12) wherein the crown component consists of an iron-based or nickel-based alloy annular portion (13) having fitted directly therein a ceramic insert (14), the crown component being joined to the skirt component by an annular composite laminated member (24) of steel (25) and aluminium alloy (26) the steel of the laminated member being energy beam welded to the annular portion of the crown component and the aluminium alloy of the laminated member being energy beam welded to the skirt component characterised in that there is after welding a sealed, hollow, annular chamber (31) disposed at the junction between the crown component and the skirt component.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 121 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
A piston according to Claim 1 characterised in that the annular portion of the crown component further comprises a lower base member (40).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A piston according to either Claim 1 or Claim 2 characterised in that the ceramic insert comprises silicon nitride.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A piston according to Claim 3 characterised in that the ceramic insert comprises two or more different ceramic materials.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
A piston according to Claim 4 characterised in that the insert comprises a silicon nitride body at least partially coated with PSZ.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
A piston according to any one preceding claim characterised in that the ceramic insert also includes a combustion bowl (15).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
A piston according to any one preceding claim characterised in that the crown component annular portion also includes a hollow, sealed, annular chamber (56) therein.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
A piston according to Claim 7 characterised in that the hollow, sealed, annular chamber is non-symmetrical.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 32 words
A piston according to any one preceding claim characterised in that an insulating member (60) is positioned between the lower portion of the ceramic insert and the top of the skirt component.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 18 words
A piston according to Claim 9 characterised in that the insulating member is made of a ceramic material.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 20 words
A piston according to Claim 9 characterised in that the insulating member comprises a metal coated with a ceramic material.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 35 words
A piston according to Claim 1 characterised in that the crown annular portion comprises two components (80,81) which are joined together along faces (82,83) which substantially lie in a plane which includes the piston axis.
