Abstract

Abstract A groove pattern for the friction facings (22) of a wet clutch (21) to equalize the face temperature of the friction facings and thus increase the thermal capacity of the clutch where there is continuous slippage. The groove pattern includes one or more circumferential grooves (23,24) dividing the friction area into two or more annular bands (25,26,27) with radial grooves (28,31,32) in each band which increase in number from the inner band (25) to the outer band (27).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 84 words
A friction facing (22) for a wet clutch plate (21) wherein the facing surface is grooved to receive cooling oil, the grooving having a pattern including at least one annular groove (23) dividing said surface into at least two annular bands (25,26), and a plurality of radial grooves (28,31) in each band connecting said annular grooves and/or the inner and outer diameters (29,33) of said facing, said radial grooves in each band being out of alignment with the grooves of the next adjacent band.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 84 words
A friction facing (22) for a wet clutch plate (21) wherein the facing surface is grooved to receive cooling oil, the grooving having a pattern including at least one annular groove (23) dividing said surface into at least two annular bands (25,26), and a plurality of radial grooves (28,31) in each band connecting said annular grooves and/or the inner and outer diameters (29,33) of said facing, said radial grooves in each band being out of alignment with the grooves of the next adjacent band.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
A friction facing as set forth in Claim 1, in which the number of radial grooves (28,31) in each succeeding band increases from the inner to the outer band.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
A friction facing as set forth in Claim 1, in which the width to depth ratio of the grooves is approximately 2:1.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
A friction facing as set forth in Claim 1, in which said radial grooves (28,31) in each band are substantially circumferentially equally spaced.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
A friction facing as set forth in Claim 1, in which said annular bands are of substantially equal width (25,26).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
A friction facing as set forth in Claim 2, in which the number of radial grooves in each succeeding band from the inner band substantially doubles.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A friction facing as set forth in Claim 1, in which the depth of the radial grooves (28,31) decreases between the inner band and the outer band.
