A data processing machine including a processing unit, a random access memory for storing a control program and at least one application program, a data bus for connecting the processing unit and the random access memory with a plurality of adapter cards, each card including means to provide different control functions for the machine, said control program also including an application program interface for controlling the transfer of data between registers controlled by an application program and registers controlled by the adapter card characterised in that the application program interface includes a driver mechanism having means to concurrently enable more than one adapter card so that an application program can control the exchange of data between the random access memory and a plurality of adapter cards.
