Abstract

Abstract An isocyanate compound is reacted with an unsaturated alcohol, which can be an adduct of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with an alkylene oxide, in an organic solvent; more than one of each type of reagent can be used provided that not more than one reaction proceeds at one time. The urethane product contains double bonds; it is used as a sizing agent, in aqueous emulsion or in organic solution, to coat carbon fibers to improve their adhesion to a polymeric matrix; preferably an unsaturated polyester or a vinyl ester to which the sizing agent cross-links. The matrix is then hardened to form a composite material containing the fibers.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 67 words
A process of making a sizing agent for carbon fibers to be incorporated in a matrix which comprises reacting at least one isocyanate compound with at least one unsaturated alcohol to form a urethane bond, in a single reaction step or in successive steps but without more than one reaction being carried out in the reaction system at the same time, and recovering the final reaction product.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 67 words
A process of making a sizing agent for carbon fibers to be incorporated in a matrix which comprises reacting at least one isocyanate compound with at least one unsaturated alcohol to form a urethane bond, in a single reaction step or in successive steps but without more than one reaction being carried out in the reaction system at the same time, and recovering the final reaction product.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
A process as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the unsaturated alcohol used is an adduct of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with an alkylene oxide.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
A process as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the alcohol or isocyanate is present in stoichiometrically larger amount and a different kind of such alcohol or isocyanate is added after completion of a preceding reaction.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 31 words
A sizing agent produced by the process of any preceding claim, which has an unsaturated bond which is cross-linkable with a double bond in an unsaturated polyester or a polyvinyl ester.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
A sizing agent as claimed in Claim 4, which can be emulsified in water.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 42 words
A method of sizing carbon fibers to assist their subsequent incorporation into a polymeric matrix before hardening thereof, by coating the fibers with a liquid sizing agent, characterised in that a sizing agent as claimed in Claim 4 or 5 is used.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as claimed in Claim 6, wherein a solution in an organic solvent or an aqueous emulsion of the sizing agent is used.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as claimed in Claim 6 or 7, wherein the surface of the carbon fibers is oxidised before application of the sizing agent.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method as claimed in Claim 6, 7 or 8, wherein the matrix is an unsaturated polyester or a polyvinyl ester.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 41 words
A composite material which consists of sized carbon fibers contained in a hardened polymeric matrix, characterised in that the fibers were sized by the method of Claim 6, 7 or 8, and the matrix may be as claimed in Claim 9.
