Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 169 words
A transaction processing apparatus for use with microchip cards comprising terminal means (20,30) for inputting the amount of a transaction, the terminal means (20,30) having a customer's microchip card reader/writer (15) for communicating with a customer's microchip card (21) and a vendor's microchip card reader/writer (8) for communicating with a vendor's microchip card (11), and processing means linked for data interchange with the respective reader/writers (8,15) for deducting the amount of the transaction from the balance recorded in the customer's microchip card (21) and adding that amount to the balance recorded in the vendor's microchip card (11), characterized in that the customer's microchip card (21) is prepaid so that the transaction is complete when the amount has been deducted from the balance recorded in the customer's card (21) and added to the balance recorded in the vendor's card (11) and in that each of the customer's microchip card (21) and the vendor's microchip card (11) is involved in authentication processes to establish the validity of the terminal means (20,30).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 169 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 62 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the terminal means (20,30) comprises a vendor's terminal (20) having the vendor's microchip card reader/writer (8) and a customer's terminal (30) having the customer's microchip card reader/writer (15) and the vendor's microchip card (11) performs the authentication of the vendor's terminal (20) and the customer's microchip card (21) performs the authentication of the customer's terminal (30).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the amount of the transaction is input using a keyboard (6) on the vendor's terminal (20).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 54 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 3, in which the processing means is arranged to cause the customer's microchip card reader/writer (15) to write the amount of transaction in the customer's microchip card (21), to deduct that amount from the balance to determine a new balance, and to store the new balance.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 53 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the processing means is arranged to cause the vendor's microchip card reader/writer (8) to write the amount of transaction in the vendor's microchip card (11) to add that amount to the balance to determine a new balance, and to store the new balance.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims in which the apparatus includes hard copy print out means (7) for providing a confirmatory record of the transaction for the vendor and the customer.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 72 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims including means for inputting a password preferably associated with the customer's reader/writer, for confirmation of the identity of the customer to the processing means in which the processing means is arranged to cause the customer's microchip card reader/writer (15) to write the input password into the customer's microchip card (21) for authentication by reference to a password stored on the customer's microchip card (21).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 30 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 2 to 7 in which the vendor's terminal (20) and the customer's terminal (30) and the processing means are provided in an integrated unit.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 36 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 2 to 7 in which the vendor's terminal (20) and the customer's terminal (30) are provided in separate units interfaced with one another through appropriate portions of the processing means.
