Abstract

Abstract An electronic circuit board (l0l, l02) electrically connected to a bus (l50), may be removed and re-inserted in the system without the necessity of disabling other circuits connected to the bus (l50). A latch actuated switch (ll3) provides a control signal in anticipation of circuit board insertion or removal. The control signal activates a control circuit (l20) which seizes control of the bus after completion of other bus communications and stops the generation of clock pulses normally required in transmission of signals on the bus (l50). When the other bus communications have ceased, the control circuit (l20) controls power supply circuitry (l05) to remove power from the board (l0l, l02). When insertion of removal of the board (l0l, l02) is complete, the control circuit (l20) will restore the bus clock pulses and relinquish control of the bus.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 111 words
Apparatus comprising a transmission bus (l50) for transmission of signals and a connector (203) for receiving and retaining a circuit module (l0l, l02) and including conductors (207) for connecting the circuit module (l0l, l02) to the bus (l50) characterized in that a controller (l03) connected to the bus (l50) is responsive to a first control signal indicating insertion or removal of a circuit module (l0l, l02) in the connector (203) for inhibiting transmission of signals on the bus (l50) and is responsive to a second control signal indicating completion of insertion or removal of a circuit module (l0l, l02) in the connector (203) to enable the bus (l50) to transmit signals.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 111 words
Claim 3
Independent Claim 70 words
The apparatus in accordance with claim l, further characterized in that the controller (l03) comprises a clock circuit (ll2) for generating clock pulses which control transmission of signals on the bus (l50) and a control circuit (l20) responsive to the first control signal to stop the clock circuit (ll2) from generating clock pulses and responsive to the second control signal to enable the clock circuit (ll2) to generate clock pulses.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
The apparatus in accordance with claim 2 characterized in that the controller (l03) comprises a bus arbiter (l07) connected to the transmission bus (l50) for sensing bus occupancy and the control circuit (l20) is responsive to the arbiter (l07) to stop the clock circuit (ll2) only when the bus (l50) is not occupied.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 73 words
The apparatus in accordance with claim l characterized in that a power supply circuit (l05) is connected to the circuit modules (l0l, l02) and controller (l03) for providing electrical power to circuit modules (l0l, l02) connected to the bus and the control circuit (l20) is further responsive to the first control signal to selectively inhibit the power supply circuit (l05) from providing power to circuit modules (l0l, l02) connected to the bus (l50).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 29 words
The apparatus in accordance with claim l further characterized in that the circuit module (l0l, l02) comprises a switch (ll3, 2l0) for generating the first and second control signals.
