Abstract

Abstract An ion mobility spectrometer (10) for detecting ions and for facilitating controlled chemical reactions is described incorporating an inlet (16) for carrier and sample gas (25, 29), a reaction region (17) having an ionization source (33) and at least two electrodes (30, 34) for generating an electric field and a drift region (20) having at least two electrodes (40-44) for generating an electric field therein wherein each electrode (40-44) is coupled to a power supply (50-54) for placing a predetermined potential on the electrode and wherein each power supply (50-54) is controlled by an electric field controller (60) for providing a sequence of potentials on each electrode (30, 34, 40-44) in the reaction region (17) and drift region (20) to control the motion and position of ions in the drift region (20). The invention overcomes the problem of detection sensitivity, detection selectivity and resolution between ions of similar mobility. The invention further overcomes the problem of facilitating certain chemical reactions by bringing ions of opposite polarity together.
