Abstract

Abstract Individualized, crosslinked fiber, and process for making such fibers. The individualized, crosslinked fibers have between about 0.5 mole % and about 3.5 mole % crosslinking agent, calculated on a cellulose anhydroglucose molar basis, reacted with fibers in the form of intrafiber crosslink bonds, wherein the crosslinking agent is selected from the group consisting of C₂ - C₈ dialdehydes, C₂ - C₈ dialdehyde acid analogues having at least one aldehyde functionality, and oligomers of such C₂ - C₈ dialdehydes, and dialdehyde acid analogues. Preferably, the crosslinking agent is glutaraldehyde, and between about 0.75 mole % and about 2.5 mole % crosslinking agent react to form the intrafiber crosslink bonds. The individualized crosslinked fibers are useful in a variety of absorbent sturcture applications.

Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
Individualized, crosslinked fibers, according to either one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that said crosslinking agent is selected from glutaraldehyde, glyoxal, and glyoxylic acid.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words

Claim 6
Dependent Claim 125 words
A process for making individualized, crosslinked cellulosic fibers, characterized in that said process comprises the steps of: a) providing cellulosic fibers; b) contacting said fibers with a crosslinking agent selected from C₂-C₈ dialdehydes, C₂-C₈ dialdehyde acid analogues having at least one aldehyde group, and oligomers of said dialdehydes and dialdehyde acid analogues; and c) reacting said crosslinking agent with said fibers in the substantial absence of interfiber bonds, to form intrafiber crosslink bonds; said fibers being contacted with a sufficient amount of crosslinking agent such that between 0.5 mole % and 3.5 mole % crosslinking agent, calculated on a cellulose anhydroglucose molar basis, react with said fibers to form said intrafiber crosslink bonds, wherein said fibers, subsequent to crosslinking have WRV's of less than 60.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 49 words
A process according to claim 5 characterized in that step (b) comprises contacting said fibers with a solution of the crosslinking agent followed by the additional steps of mechanically separating said fibers into substantially individual form; and drying said fibers prior to reacting said fibers with said crosslinking agent.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 69 words
A process according to claim 5 characterized in that step (b) comprises contacting said fibers with a solution of the crosslinking agent and in that, in the crosslinking agent reaction step (c) said crosslinking solution contains a water-miscible, polar diluent and an insusfficient amount of water to cause said fibers to swell to a level greater than a level of swelling corresponding to fibers containing 30 wt. % water.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 123 words
A process according to claim 5 characterized in that step (b) comprises contacting said fibers with an aqueous solution of the crosslinking agent said solution containing a sufficient amount of crosslinking agent such that said fibers do not substantially swell; followed by the additional steps of defluidizing said fibers and drying said fibers to a moisture content of less than 30 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the fibers; contacting said fibers with a solution containing a polar, water-miscible diluent and an insufficient amount of water to induce said fibers to swell beyond a degree of swelling corresponding to fibers having a 30 wt. % moisture content; and then reacting said crosslinking agent with said fibers to form intrafiber crosslink bonds.
