Abstract
Abstract A radio location apparatus for use with a communication system, utilizes a wide-band ranging message having a frequency spectrum of widely spaced narrow spikes (38) comb like structure which fits between the channels (28) of the voice communications system. The system may be a cellular radio system. The system may also be a satellite communication system, in which case, the wide band message gives a high resolution but ambiguous indication of location. In order to resolve the ambiguity, the satellite sytem utilizes a narrow band ranging message for obtaining an unambiguous low resolution fix.
