Abstract
Abstract A cardiac pacer, which generates pacing pulses at a predetermined basic pacing rate, includes a device for sensing physical activity and for generating a control signal dependent thereon. It further comprises a device for varying the predetermined basic pacing rate dependent on the control signal, a device (37-43) for monitoring when the pacing rate runs at least at a predetermined high rate for a predetermined time period and for generating an output signal if said high rate is reached and a device (34, 35) for forcing the pacing rate back to a lower rate dependent on said output signal.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim
134 words
A cardiac pacer for pacing a heart comprising a) means (4) for generating pacing pulses (17) at a predetermind basic pacing rate; b) means (2, 3) for transmitting the pacing pulses (17) to the heart (1) for pacing; c) means (2, 8, 21; 19, 8, 21; 2, 23, 24) for sensing physical activity and for generating a control signal dependent thereon; d) means (13, 31, 32, 34, 36) for varying the predetermined basic pacing rate dependent on the control signal; e) means (37-43) for monitoring when the pacing rate runs at least at a predetermined high rate for a predetermined time period and for generating an output signal if said high rate is reached; and f) means (34, 35) for forcing said pacing rate back to a lower rate dependent on said output signal.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
17 words
The cardiac pacer according to claim 1, wherein the lower rate is the predetermined basic pacing rate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
55 words
The cardiac pacer according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the pacing pulses generating means (4) run at the lower rate for a predetermined, e.g. programmable, time period before switching back to control dependent on the control signal generated by the means (2, 8, 21; 19, 8, 21; 2, 23, 24) for sensing physical activity.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
41 words
The cardiac pacer according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the pacing pulses generating means (4) run at the lower rate until the control signal falls below the predetermined high rate, whereupon the control signal resumes control of the pacing rate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
137 words
The cardiac pacer according to one of the preceding claims 1 to 4, wherein said means for varying the predetermined basic pacing rate comprise a voltage to pulse rate converter (13) for the control signal, an analog signal to digital control word converter (36) for the output signal of a voltage to pulse rate converter (13) of the control signal, a time base register (34) for the output signal of the analog signal to ditigal control word converter (34), a down counter (32) which is set to higher zero counting speed when the activity rate increases and a zero decoder (31) at the output of the down counter (32), said zero decoder (31) being connected with and controlling the pacing pulse generating means (4) in a manner that a pacing pulse is generated at each zero count.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
94 words
The cardiac pacer according to claim 5, wherein said means (34, 35) for forcing the pacing rate to a lower rate comprising a gate (35) connected between the time base register (34) and the analog signal to digital control word converter (36), said gate (35) being designated for disconnecting the time base register (34) from the analog signal to digital control word converter if the pacing rate runs at or above the predetermined high rate for the predetermined time period so that the time base register (34) returns to the predetermined basic pacing rate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
88 words
The cardiac pacer according to claim 6, wherein said means (37-43) for monitoring comprise a high rate comparator (37) for the output of the time base register (34) and the predetermined high rate signal of a high rate value generator (38), said high rate comparator (37) controlling said gate (35) dependent on the comparator output signal and the programmable time period in a manner that the gate (35) is closed for the output of the analog signal to digital control word converter (36) over said programmable time period.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
84 words
The cardiac pacer according to claim 7, wherein said means (37-43) for monitoring further comprise an integrator (39) for the output of the high rate comparator (37), a threshold discriminator (40) for the output of the integrator (39), said threshold discriminator (40) having a threshold which can be varied according to the predetermined high rate time period, and a monostable multivibrator (42) which is triggered by the threshold discriminator (40) to close the gate (35) when the output of the integrator exceeds the threshold.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
24 words
The cardiac pacer according to claim 8, wherein the pulse width of the monostable multivibrator (42) is pre-selectable according to the programmable time period.
