An oral composition comprising: (a) from about 0% to about 70% by weight of a dental abrasive compatible with pyrophosphate ions and fluoride ions; (b) an amount of fluoride ion source sufficient to supply from about 50 ppm to about 3,500 ppm of fluoride ions; (c) an amount of at least one pyrophosphate source sufficient to provide at least 1.5% ((P207)-4; and (d) from about 2% to about 95% water; wherein the pH of said composition is from about 6.0 to about 10.0, said composition contains sodium ions and potassium ions in a ratio of sodium ions to potassium ions of from about 0.2:1 to about 5.7:1 and said compositions contain not more than about 0.5% total dialkali metal pyrophosphate sources.
