Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim
117 words
An enzyme electrode capable of responding amperometrically to the catalytic activity of the enzyme in the presence of its respective substrate and comprising the enzyme immobilised or adsorbed onto the surface of an electrically conductive support member consisting of or comprising a platinised porous layer of resin-bonded carbon or graphite particles, characterised in that said porous layer of resin-bonded carbon or graphite particles comprises particles of finely divided platinum group metal intimately mixed with, or deposited or adsorbed onto the surface of, said carbon or graphite particles, thereby to provide, as said electrically conductive support member, a substantially heterogeneous layer of resin-bonded carbon or graphite particles, with said platinum group metal dispersed substantially uniformly throughout said layer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
16 words
An enzyme electrode according to claim 1, wherein said platinum group metal is platinum or palladium.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
21 words
An enzyme electrode according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the synthetic resin binder is a fluorocarbon resin or polyvinyl acetate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
An enzyme electrode according to claim 3, wherein the synthetic resin binder is polytetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
An enzyme electrode according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein the enzyme immobilised or adsorbed onto the surface of the substrate is an oxido-reductase.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
13 words
An enzyme electrode according to claim 5, wherein the oxido-reductase is glucose oxidase.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
51 words
An enzyme electrode according to any one of claims 1-6, wherein the electrically conductive support member comprises an electrically conductive base having bonded as a surface layer thereon said resin-bonded carbon or graphite particles admixed with, or having adsorbed or deposited onto the surface thereof, said finely divided platinum group metal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
An enzyme electrode according to claim 7, wherein the electrically conductive support member is an electrically conductive carbon paper.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
41 words
An enzyme electrode according to any one of claims 1-8, wherein said porous layer comprises resin-bonded carbon or graphite particles having said platinum group metal deposited or adsorbed onto the surface of the individual particles prior to bonding with said resin.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
50 words
An enzyme electrode according to claim 9, wherein said porous layer comprises a resin-bonded platinised carbon powder, said powder having a particle size in the range 5 to 30 nm and having adsorbed on the surface thereof colloidal platinum having a particle size in the range 1.5 to 2.5 nm.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
23 words
An enzyme electrode according to any one of claims 1-10, the surface of which is protected by microporous membrane permeable to said substrate.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
14 words
An enzyme electrode according to claim 11, wherein said membrane is a polycarbonate membrane.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
14 words
A sensor incorporating an enzyme electrode as claimed in any one of claims 1-12.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
94 words
An amperometric method for the quantitative determination of an analyte in a sample, said analyte itself being, or convertible into, an enzyme substrate capable of reacting catalytically with said enzyme to produce a measurable current, which comprises contacting the sample, if necessary after conversion of said analyte into said reactive enzyme substrate species, with an enzyme electrode comprising an immobilised enzyme or mixture of enzymes reactive with said substrate to produce said current, and measuring the current produced, wherein the enzyme electrode comprises an enzyme electrode as defined in any one of claims 1-12.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
13 words
A method according to claim 14, wherein the sample is a clinical sample.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim
24 words
A method according to claim 15, wherein the sample is a blood sample, the analyte is glucose and the enzyme is a glucose oxidase.
