Abstract

Abstract Non-woven material comprising a web of spunbonded polymeric filaments wherein the web is impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent e.g. a fluorocarbon, before being hot calendered on at least one side. This results in material having an outer surface which is much more resistant to abrasion than an untreated spunbonded surface. The non-woven material may comprise a laminate of layers e.g. two.layers of spunbonded filaments sandwiching a central layer of melt-blown fibres, the laminate being impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent before hot calendering on at least one side.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 26 words
Non-woven material comprising a web of spunbonded polymeric filaments the web being impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent before hot calendering on at least one side.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 26 words
Non-woven material comprising a web of spunbonded polymeric filaments the web being impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent before hot calendering on at least one side.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
A laminate of layers of non-woven material comprising a layer of spunbonded filaments, and a layer of melt-blown polymeric fibres, the laminate being impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent before hot calendering of the outer surface of the spunbonded layer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
A laminate of layers of non-woven material comprising a layer of spunbonded filaments, and a layer of melt-blown polymeric fibres, the laminate being impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent before hot calendering of the outer surface of the spunbonded layer.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 39 words
A laminate of layers of non-woven material comprising two layers of spunbonded polymeric filaments sandwiching a central layer of melt-blown polymeric fibres, the laminate being impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent before hot calendering on at least one side.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 39 words
A laminate of layers of non-woven material comprising two layers of spunbonded polymeric filaments sandwiching a central layer of melt-blown polymeric fibres, the laminate being impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent before hot calendering on at least one side.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
A laminate as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the thermal stabilising agent is a fluorocarbon.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
Non-woven material as claimed in any of claims 2 to 4 in which the layers are held together by small bond areas caused by embossing.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 40 words
A process for preparing non-woven material as claimed in any one of claims l to 5 in which the layer or layers are impregnated with a thermal stabilising agent, at least one surface of the material being thereafter hot calendered.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A process as claimed in Claim 6 in which the calendering is carried out by passing the material through the nip of a smooth heated roller and a backing roller.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process as claimed in claim 7 wherein the heated roller is of steel and the backing roller is of plastic, cotton, paper or the like.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 38 words
A process as claimed in either claim 7 or 8 wherein the heated roller is heated to a temperature substantially the same as the melting point of the polymer of the fibres in the layer to be calendered.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 48 words
l0. A process as claimed in any one of claims 7 to 9 wherein the nip pressure is set so as to give a light pressure and the material is passed through the nip sufficiently quickly so that in effect the surface is given a "shock heat" treatment.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 21 words
A process as claimed in any one of claims 6 to l0 wherein the material is treated before calendering by heating.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 33 words
A process as claimed in any one of claims 6 to ll wherein the material is impregnated before calendering with an anti static and fluid repellent coating which comprises the thermal stabilising agent.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 27 words
A process as claimed in claim l2 wherein the material is coated by running the material through a bath containing the coating together with a wetting agent.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 28 words
A process as claimed in claim l3 wherein the material is thereafter squeezed to remove excess liquid, and is then passed over heated drums to drive off water.
