Device for reversible optical data storage
Abstract
Abstract The device uses polymeric liquid crystals with mesogenic side groups as a storage medium, arranged for the storage of information by means of selective variation of the order of the polymeric liquid crystals by means of a heat source. For the purpose of storing information, the macroscopically oriented film of the liquid- crystalline polymer, which in the temperature range below the glass transition temperature Tg > Ta (room temperature) is in a solid, dimensionally stable state of the liquid-crystalline polymer, is selectively heated locally to the isotropically liquid state by means of the heat source and, once the heat source has been switched off, the local information is fixed in the glass state of the polymer. <IMAGE>
