Abstract

An ignition system for an internal combustion engine with the following structure: a pulse generator generates angular pulses and a reference pulse synchronously with the crankshaft rotation; To determine a speed value, clock pulses are counted in a speed counter during a time base; In accordance with the speed value and a digitized load value, a map memory storing fixed values is queried; depending on the stored values of the map memory, an ignition counter is preset, which outputs a switching pulse for the ignition signal by counting angular pulses; the speed value and the load value are stored in buffers at the end of the time base; the map memory contains multi-bit ignition values for determining the ignition angle; The preset ignition counter is preloaded with the respective multi-bit ignition value at a predetermined angle value. The technical problem is the provision of an ignition system which has a high evaluation speed, so that a reliable determination of the ignition value is possible within the available times even at high speeds, taking into account the required correction quantities. The angular pulses are used as clock pulses. A correction field memory, which also stores fixed values, contains multi-bit correction values in temperature / load / speed characteristics and / or octane / load characteristics. During a subsequent correction angle section, the count of the ignition counter is corrected additively or subtractively by the multi-bit correction values. At a predetermined angle value, the ignition counter is released, the angle pulses are counted up to the overflow and the overflow pulse triggers the ignition as a switching pulse.
