Abstract
Abstract A method of making an intraocular lens (11) including providing a fixation (15, 17) member having a proximal end portion with the proximal end portion including an elongated filament, converting a region of said filament at said proximal end portion from a first configuration into a second configuration which is adapted to provide a mechanical interlock and molding an optic about the proximal end portion of the fixation (15, 17) member to form a mechanical interlock between the second configuration and the optic and to attach the fixation member (15, 17) to the optic (13).

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim
81 words
An intraocular lens comprising: at least one fixation member having a proximal end portion, said proximal end portion including a filament with the material of a region of the filament of the proximal end portion being permanently deformed into a configuration which is capable of forming a mechanical interlock; and an optic cast about said configuration and the proximal end portion to form a mechanical interlock between said configuration and the optic and to attach the fixation member to the optic.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
24 words
An intraocular lens as defined in claim 1, wherein said region of said filament carries an enlargement which at least partially defines said configuration.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
28 words
An intraocular lens as defined in claim 1 wherein said region of said filament has at least one outwardly opening cavity which at least partially defines said configuration.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
45 words
An intraocular lens as defined in claim 1 wherein said region of said filament has at least one opening extending therethrough which at least partially defines said configuration, a portion of said optic being in said opening to at least partly define said mechanical interlock.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
48 words
An intraocular lens as defined in claim 1 wherein at least a portion of said region is formed into at least a portion of a loop which forms an opening and a region of the optic is in said opening to at least partially define said mechanical interlock.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
41 words
An intraocular lens as defined in any of claims 1 to 5 wherein said optic can be flexed to permit it to be inserted through a relatively small incision into the eye and said configuration is more rigid than the optic
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
50 words
An intraocular lens as defined in any one of claims 1 to 6 including a second fixation member having a proximal end portion embedded within a peripheral portion of the optic in a position generally diametrically opposite and spaced apart from the proximal end portion of said one fixation member.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
95 words
A method of making an intraocular lens comprising: providing a fixation member having a proximal end portion with the proximal end portion including an elongated filament of a first configuration; forming a region of said filament at said proximal end portion into a second configuration which is different from said first configuration and which is capable of providing a mechanical interlock; and molding an optic about the proximal end portion of the fixation member to form a mechanical interlock between said second configuration and the optic and to attach the fixation member to the optic.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
95 words
A method of making an intraocular lens comprising: providing a fixation member having a proximal end portion with the proximal end portion including an elongated filament of a first configuration; forming a region of said filament at said proximal end portion into a second configuration which is different from said first configuration and which is capable of providing a mechanical interlock; and molding an optic about the proximal end portion of the fixation member to form a mechanical interlock between said second configuration and the optic and to attach the fixation member to the optic.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
80 words
A method as defined in claim 8 wherein said step of forming is carried out so that said second configuration is wider than said first configuration to thereby form an enlargement; said step of forming includes heating said region of the filament to form said enlargement; and said step of heating includes heating said region of the filament until it flows to form said enlargement with said enlargement being generally bulbous and permitting the bulbous enlargement to cool and solidify.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
59 words
A method as defined in claim 9 wherein said step of forming is carried out so that said second configuration is wider than said first configuration in only one plane to form said enlargement and said step of molding is carried out so that said optic has its broadest dimensions in one plane and said planes are generally parallel.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
25 words
A method as defined in claim 8 wherein said step of forming includes permanently bending said region of the filament to form said second configuration.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method as defined in claim 8 wherein said step of forming includes removing material from said region of the filament to provide said second configuration.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
43 words
A method as defined in claim 8 wherein said second configuration has an opening extending through it and said step of moulding includes flowing material of the optic into said opening and curing said material to at least assist in forming said interlock.
