Magneto-optical recording media
Abstract
Abstract A magneto-optical recording medium comprises a perpendicular anisotropy magnetic layer (20) formed by laminating first and second ferrimagnetic layers (21,22). The first ferrimagnetic layer (21) formed of a rare earth metal (e.g. Tb) and a transition metal (e.g. Fe,Co) has magnetisation (M₁) perpendicular to a surface thereof resulting from excess magnetisation of the rare earth metal compared to the transition metal, and does not have a compensation temperature at room temperature. The second ferrimagnetic layer (22) is also formed of a rare earth metal and a transition metal, has magnetisation (M₂) perpendicular to a surface thereof resulting from excess magnetisation of the transition metal, and does not have a compensation temperature at room temperature. The first and second ferrimagnetic layers (21,22) are superposed and coupled by exchange interaction, the magnetisation (M₁) of the first ferrimagnetic layer (21) and the magnetisation (M₂) of the second ferrimagnetic layer (22) being arranged in opposite directions at a temperature between room temperature and a recording temperature at about the Curie temperature of at least one of the ferrimagnetic layers (21,22). A recording medium of this type is capable of stable high-density recording and easy over-writing.
