Abstract

Abstract A method of increasing the time-averaged cross-flow fiftra- tion flux of a liquid through a porous filter medium over the period of a filtration run, comprising the steps of (a) flowing the liquid transversely through the filter medium by establishing a pressure differential across the filter medium and (b) commencing the filtration run by gradually increasing the flow rate of the filtrate from essentially zero to the desired operational flow rate over a sufficiently extended period of time to substantially prevent the intrusion of the particles of material being filtered out of the liquid into the filter medium per se. Also disclosed is an apparatus for practising the above method.

A method of increasing the time-averaged cross-flow filtration flux of a liquid through a porous filter medium over the period of a filtration run, comprising the steps of: a) flowing the liquid transversely through the filter medium by establishing a pressure differential across the filter medium; and b) commencing the filtration run by gradually increasing the flow rate of the filtrate from essentially zero to the desired operational flow rate over a sufficiently extended period of time to substantially prevent the intrusion of the particles of material being filtered out of the liquid into the filter medium per se.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 99 words
A method of increasing the time-averaged cross-flow filtration flux of a liquid through a porous filter medium over the period of a filtration run, comprising the steps of: a) flowing the liquid transversely through the filter medium by establishing a pressure differential across the filter medium; and b) commencing the filtration run by gradually increasing the flow rate of the filtrate from essentially zero to the desired operational flow rate over a sufficiently extended period of time to substantially prevent the intrusion of the particles of material being filtered out of the liquid into the filter medium per se.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said extended period of time is within the range of from about 15 seconds to about 45 seconds.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 111 words
Apparatus for increasing the time-averaged cross-flow filtration flux of a liquid through a porous filter medium over the period of a filtration run, comprising: a) a porous filter medium; b) means for flowing the liquid transversely through said filter medium, including means for establishing a pressure differential across said filter medium; and c) means for gradually increasing the volume of the liquid being filtered by commencing the filtration run at essentially zero and steadily increasing said volume to the desired operational volume over a sufficiently extended period of time to substantially prevent the intrusion of the particles of material being filtered out of the liquid into said filter medium per se.
Claim 5
