Abstract

Abstract A filter cartridge structure and method of manufacture wherein a cylindrical pleated filter element (14) is disposed about a perforated center tube (11) and wherein thermoplastic end caps (16, 18) are formed integrally to the ends of the filter element and center tube to seal the filter element and tube against leakage and provide a completed filter cartridge structure.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 98 words
A filter cartridge comprising a. a cylindrical support tube (11) having a perforated outer wall, b. a filter medium (14) disposed about said support tube for filtering fluid to and for discharge from said support tube. and c. end caps (16,18) at opposite ends of the filter medium support tube to seal the ends of said filter medium characterised in that the end caps (16,18) are formed integrally to the ends of the support tube (11) and integrally merge the end cap (16,18) to the filter medium (14) and to said outer wall of the support tube (11).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 98 words
A filter cartridge comprising a. a cylindrical support tube (11) having a perforated outer wall, b. a filter medium (14) disposed about said support tube for filtering fluid to and for discharge from said support tube. and c. end caps (16,18) at opposite ends of the filter medium support tube to seal the ends of said filter medium characterised in that the end caps (16,18) are formed integrally to the ends of the support tube (11) and integrally merge the end cap (16,18) to the filter medium (14) and to said outer wall of the support tube (11).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
The cartridge of Claim 1 wherein said filter medium comprises an elongated porous sheet material having a plurality of V-shaped pleats (20) extending longitudinally of said support tube and wherein said end caps are provided at the opposite ends of said pleats to fix and seal said pleats in position about said tube.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
The cartridge of Claim 1 or 2 wherein said end caps are formed from thermoplastic material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
The cartridge of Claim 1.2 or 3 wherein the ends of said filter medium are integrally embedded in the end cap material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 44 words
The cartridge of Claim 4 wherein said end caps, support tube and said filter medium are of a selected compatible material wherein said filter medium and said support tube have melting temperatures equal to or higher than the thermoplastic material of said end caps.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
The cartridge of Claim 4 or 5 wherein a protective netting (24) is wrapped about the outer periphery of said filter medium and has opposite end portions merged into said end caps.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 44 words
The cartridge of Claim 4 or 5 wherein said filter medium is surrounded by a tube member (44) having a plurality of openings to permit fluid to enter said filter medium and wherein said tube has opposite end portions merged into said end caps.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 140 words
A method for forming an end cap (16.18) for the end of a filter element (14) disposed about the periphery of a center support tube (11), characterised by the steps of charging a mould (30) with a thermoplastic polymer material for forming a pool (32) of melted polymer. feeding the charged mould to a conveyor oven where sequentially moisture is driven from the polymer and the mould elevated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the polymer, moving said mould to a cooling fixture and placing one end of the cylindrical filter element (14) into the pool of molten polymer in said mould, applying pressure to the opposite end of the filter element and allowing the polymer to solidify in the mould to seal the ends of said filter element, and then removing said mould from the solidified polymer.
Claim 10
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method of Claim 8 wherein said filter element (14) comprises a pleated porous sheet material having a melting temperature equal to or higher than the thermoplastic polymer in said mould.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 52 words
The method of Claim 8 or 9 wherein said filter element is disposed about the support tube enclosed within a protective outer material and including the step of placing the ends of said tube and protective outer material into the molten polymer in the mould with said filter element for solidification therewith.
