Adhesion promoting polymeric materials

Claim 2

A polymer composition characterized in that it comprises a) from 1 to 60 weight percent of recurring units derived from a vinyl monomer having a primary amine additioin salt component and/or a vinyl monomer having an aminostyrene addition salt component; b) from 0 to 50 weight percent of recurring units derived from a hydrophilic vinyl monomer; and c) from 20 to 98 weight percent of recurring units derived from a hydrophobic nonionic vinyl monomer.

Claim 3

A polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the vinyl monomer having the primary amine addition salt component has the structure wherein R is hydrogen or methyl; A is either -OR¹ - or ; R¹ is a straight or branched chain alkylene group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R² is hydrogen or a straight or branched chain alkyl or cycloalkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms; and X is an acid anion.

Claim 4

A polymer composition according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the vinyl monomer having the amino-sytrene addition salt component has the structure wherein X is an acid anion.

Claim 5

A polymer composition according to claim 2 comprising a) from 1 to 60 weight percent of recurring units derived from the group consisting of an aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride and an aminopropylmethacrylamide hydrochloride; b) from 0 to 50 weight percent of a polymerized hydroxyethyl methacrylate; and c) 20 to 98 weight percent of a polymerized monomer derived from the group consisting of butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and styrene.

Claim 6

A polymer composition according to claim 2 or 4 comprising poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-2-aminoethyl methacryl­ate hydrochloride-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate); poly(methyl acrylate-co-2-aminoethyl methacryl­ate hydrochloride-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate); poly(ethyl acrylate-co-2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate); poly[n-butyl methacrylate-co-N-(3-aminopropyl)­methacrylamide hydrochloride-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate]; poly[n-butyl acrylate-co-N-(3-aminopropyl)­methacrylamide hydrochloride-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate]; or poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-styrene-co-2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride).

Claim 8

An aqueous polymer and gelatin coating composition characterized in that the polymer to gelatin ratio is in the range of 95:5 to 60:40 and the polymer is a composition according to any one of claims 1 to 6.

Claim 9

The composition according to claim 7 also comprising from 0.5 to 1.0 weight percent of a hardener.

Claim 10

A photographic element comprising a discharge-treated polyester film support having coated directly thereon a crosslinked layer of the polymer and gelatin composition according to claim 7 or 8.

Claim 11

A method of improving the adhesion to discharge-treated polyester supports comprising the step of applying directly on the polyester support an aqueous polymer and gelatin coating composition according to claim 7 or 8.
