Abstract

Abstract A mobile communications system which makes use of the existing paging network and PSTN. The system utilises a plurality of strategically placed fixed stations (FS1 to FSn) connected to the PSTN. System subscribers have cordless telephones (CT1 to CT4) which are operatively linked to the PSTN via the fixed stations. Each cordless telephone (CT1 to CT4) has a message pager which is capable of receiving paging messages transmitted by the paging network transmitters (P1 to P3). A call to a cordless telephone is initiated by a paging signal giving the calling subscriber's number and the cordless telephone establishes a radio link with an in-range fixed station, wherever it is in the geograph1cal area, and calls back to the initiating subscriber. The radio link with fixed station has to be maintained for the duration of the call because there is no provision for handing-off as in a MATS. Call charging may be related to the rate of discharge, which rate may vary with call type, of at least one battery in the cordless telephone (CT1 to CT4).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 24
Claim 1
Independent Claim 62 words
A communications system comprising a paging network accessible via the public switched network (PSTN), a plurality of geographically spread fixed stations operatively coupled to the PSTN, each fixed station comprising a transmitter, receiver, encoder and decoder, and a plurality of cordless telephones capable of communicating with any one of the fixed stations, when in range, each cordless telephone including a message pager.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 62 words
A communications system comprising a paging network accessible via the public switched network (PSTN), a plurality of geographically spread fixed stations operatively coupled to the PSTN, each fixed station comprising a transmitter, receiver, encoder and decoder, and a plurality of cordless telephones capable of communicating with any one of the fixed stations, when in range, each cordless telephone including a message pager.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
A communication system as claimed in Claim 1, wherein each cordless telephone includes an in-range detector.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 57 words
A communications system as claimed in Claim 2, wherein each message pager is coupled to the cordless telephone in which it is included for communicating to that cordless telephone a calling subscriber's number transmitted to the message pager and actuating calling of that number over the PSTN when the cordless telephone is in-range of a fixed station.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
A communications system as claimed in Claim 1,2 or 3, wherein the message pager in a cordless telephone includes a memory enabling paging calls to be stored whilst the cordless telephone is engaged.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 42 words
A communications system as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein each fixed station in a local area operates on a different channel frequency and each cordless telephone includes means to tune the cordless telephone to a particular channel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A communications system as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 5, wherein at least one fixed station is coupled to a MATs extension.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
A communications system as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 6, wherein the message pager includes battery economising means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 34 words
A communications system as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 7, wherein the call charging rate is related to the rate of discharge of at least one battery in the cordless telephone.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
A communication system as claimed in Claim 8, wherein the rate of discharge is related to the type of call.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 24 words
A cordless telephone for use in the communications system as claimed in Claim 1, comprising a transmitter, receiver, encoder, decoder and a message pager.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 13 words
A cordless telephone as claimed in Claim 10, further comprising an in-range detector.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 47 words
A cordless telephone as claimed in Claim 11, wherein the corresponding message pager is coupled thereto for communicating to it a subscriber's number transmitted to the message pager and actuating calling of that number over the PSTN when the cordless telephone is in-range of a fixed station.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 20 words
A cordless telephone as claimed in Claim 10,11 or 12, 11,including means for storing paging messages whilst it is engaged.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 31 words
A cordless telephone as claimed in any one of Claims 10 to 13, wherein the transmitter and receiver are tunable to the channel frequency of a fixed station in the system.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 21 words
A cordless telephone as claimed in any one of Claims 10 to 14, wherein the message pager includes battery economising means.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 54 words
A method of operating a communications system as claimed in Claim 1, wherein calls between a subscriber and a cordless telephone are established by transmitting, as a paging signal, a signal identifying the selected cordless telephone and the subscriber's number, which number is dialled by the cordless telephone on receipt of the paging signal.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method as claimed in Claim 16, wherein the cordless telephone checks that it is within range of a fixed station before dialling the subscriber's number.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as claimed in Claim 17, wherein the dialling of the subscriber's number occurs automatically after receipt thereof when the cordless telephone is in-range.
Claim 20
Dependent Claim 45 words
A method as claimed in Claim 15,16 or 17, wherein in the case of a cordless telephone communicating with another cordless telephone, the subscriber's number transmitted is that of the fixed station through which the calling cordless telephone has dialled the called cordless telephone's number.
Claim 21
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method as claimed in claim 19, wherein the calling cordless telephone remains energised for a predetermined time after the paging network has accepted its call.
Claim 22
Independent Claim 34 words
A method as claimed in any one of Claims 15 to 20, wherein each cordless telephone in its standby mode is de-energised and the message pager therein is operated in a battery saving mode.
Claim 23
Independent Claim 33 words
A method as claimed in any one of Claims 15 to 20, wherein the call charging rate is related to the rate of discharge of at least one battery in the cordless telephone.
Claim 24
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method as claimed in Claim 22, wherein the rate of discharge is related to the type of call.
