Abstract

Abstract An improved drug dispenser forthe pulsatile or peristaltic delivery of drugs includes a fluid reservoir (12) for storing the drug to be dispensed, an electrochemical pump (18, 20) for pumping the drug from the fluid reservoir (12), and a pump valve (34) responsive to the pump pressure such that when the pump pressure reaches some predetermined value, the pump valve (34) releases the pressure exerted upon the drug. The result is a low cost, low weight and efficient drug dispenser for the pulsatile delivery of drugs.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 42 words
An electrochemically-driven pulsatile drug dispenser, comprising: an electrochemical pump for pumping a fluid; and a pump valve responsive to the pump pressure, wherein the pump valve releases the pump pressure exerted upon the fluid when the pump pressure reaches a predetermined value.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 42 words
An electrochemically-driven pulsatile drug dispenser, comprising: an electrochemical pump for pumping a fluid; and a pump valve responsive to the pump pressure, wherein the pump valve releases the pump pressure exerted upon the fluid when the pump pressure reaches a predetermined value.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 51 words
The electrochemically-driven pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 1,- wherein the pump valve includes: a pump valve seat; and a pump valve diaphragm having a perforation, wherein the pump valve diaphragm moves upward from the pump valve seat at the predetermined value and releases the pump pressure through the perforation.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
The electrochemically-driven pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 1, wherein the electrochemical pump includes: an electrochemical cell for pressurizing a gas; and a pump chamber responsive to the pressurized gas for pumping the fluid.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 31 words
The electrochemically-driven pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 3, wherein the electrochemical cell includes: an electrolytic membrane; and a pair of electrodes disposed on either side of the electrolytic membrane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 37 words
The slectrochemically-driven pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 3, wherein the pump chamber includes: an inlet port; an outlet port; and a flexible diaphragm for exerting the gas pressure on the fluid in the pump chamber.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
The electrochemically-driven pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 1, and further comprising: a fluid reservoir for storing the fluid.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 54 words
A pulsatile drug dispenser, comprising: means for pressurizing a fluid; means for pumping a drug with the pressurized fluid; means responsive to the pressurized fluid, wherein the means responsive to the pressurized fluid releases the fluid when the fluid pressure reaches a predetermined value, thereby pumping the drug in a pulsatile or peristaltic motion.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 54 words
A pulsatile drug dispenser, comprising: means for pressurizing a fluid; means for pumping a drug with the pressurized fluid; means responsive to the pressurized fluid, wherein the means responsive to the pressurized fluid releases the fluid when the fluid pressure reaches a predetermined value, thereby pumping the drug in a pulsatile or peristaltic motion.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 53 words
The pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 7, wherein the means responsive to the pressurized fluid includes: a pump valve seat; and a pump valve diaphragm having a perforation, wherein the pump valve diaphragm moves upward from the pump valve seat at the predetermined value and releases the fluid through the perforation.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 41 words
The pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 7, wherein the means for pressurizing a fluid includes: an electrochemical celt for pressurizing the fluid; and a pump chamber responsive to the pressurized fluid for pumping the drug with the pressurized fluid.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 30 words
The pulsatile drug diaphragm as defined in claim 9, wherein the electrochemical cell includes: an electrolytic membrane; and a pair of electrodes disposed on either side of the electrolytic membrane.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 36 words
The pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in claim 9, wherein the pump chamber includes: a inlet port; an outlet port; and a flexible diaphragm for exerting the fluid pressure on the drug in the pump chamber.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 18 words
The pulsatile drug dispenser as defined in a claim 7, and further comprising: means for storing the drug.
