Image-forming process
Abstract
Images are created by the following procedure: (i) A substrate is treated with a liquid mixture containing (A) a radical which can be polymerized by free radicals, such as, for example, an acrylate ester, (B) a radiation-activatable polymerization initiator for (A), such as, for example, a metallocene or a mixture of organometallic compounds from group IVA with a photoreducible dye, (C) a radiation-curable radical other than (A), such as an epoxy resin and optionally (D) one radiation-activatable catalyst for the curing of (C), such as an aromatic onium salt, (ii) the mixture is exposed to actinic radiation at a wavelength at which the initiator (B) is activated but the remainder (C) and / or the catalyst (D) are not significantly activated, whereby (A) polymerizes and the liquid Layer of the mixture of substances becomes solid, but still remains curable, (iii) the solidified layer is exposed in a predetermined pattern to actinic radiation at a wavelength shorter than the radiation in step (ii) at which the radiation-curable radical (C) and / or the catalyst (D) are activated, so that in the irradiated areas (C) is essentially hardened, and (iv) removing areas of the solidified layer that are not substantially cured. The process is suitable for the production of printed circuit boards and printed circuits. No solvents are required, and the coatings solidified with the first radiation are stable for a long time until they are subjected to radiation of shorter wavelength than that of the first radiation.
