Abstract

Abstract A biopsy device is provided that includes a housing (16) and relatively slidable tissue cutting and stylet members (18, 46), both movable with respect to the housing. The members (18, 46) have actuators (22, 48) slidable in the housing and arranged such that when the proximal ends are equidistant from the housing, the cutting member covers a tissue receiving cavity in the stylet. The actuators are provided with stops to prevent the distal tip of the cutting member from moving distally beyond the distal tip of the stylet. A hand grip can be releasably attached to the device.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 75 words
A biopsy device comprising a tubular needle (18) and a stylet (46) slidable in the needle, said stylet having a cavity (66) adapted to receive a tissue sample; wherein there is provided a housing (16) having two manually operable actuators (22, 48) slidable therein and operatively connected one to said needle (18) and one to said stylet (46), said actuators extending proximally of the housing, and said needle and stylet extending distally of the housing.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 75 words
A biopsy device comprising a tubular needle (18) and a stylet (46) slidable in the needle, said stylet having a cavity (66) adapted to receive a tissue sample; wherein there is provided a housing (16) having two manually operable actuators (22, 48) slidable therein and operatively connected one to said needle (18) and one to said stylet (46), said actuators extending proximally of the housing, and said needle and stylet extending distally of the housing.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
A device according to Claim 1, wherein co-operable abutments (42 to 45) are provided between said actuators (22, 48), said abutments being adapted to prevent movement of the tip of said needle (18) distally of the tip of said stylet (46).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
A device according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein abutment means are provided to limit movement of said actuators (22, 48) proximally of the housing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
A device according to Claim 3, wherein detent means (38, 40; 60, 62) are provided to releasably retain said actuators (22, 48) at the maximum proximal extension.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
A device according to Claim 3 or Claim 4, wherein the maximum proximal extension of said actuators (22, 48) is equal.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 29 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein abutment means (38, 82; 60, 84) are provided to limit distal movement of said actuators (22, 48) relative to the housing.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 18 words
A device according to Claim 6, wherein the minimum proximal extension of said actuators (22, 48) is equal.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 22 words
A device according to any one of Claims 3 to 7, wherein said abutment means includes a co-operable abutment between said actuators.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 27 words
A device according to any one of Claims 3 to 8, wherein said abutment means includes a co-operable abutment between one of said actuators and said housing.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 62 words
A device according to Claim 9, wherein said housing (16) includes an axially extending groove (78) in the wall thereof, said groove having proximal and distal end walls (81, 82), and said one actuator (22) having a tongue (36) resiliently biased into said groove (78) and engageable with one or both of said end walls to limit movement of said one actuator.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 24 words
A device according to Claim 10, wherein said housing has opposite grooves (78, 80) each actuator having a tongue biased into a respective groove.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 47 words
A device according to Claim 1, wherein abutment means are provided to limit proximal and distal movement of said actuators relative to said housing, the abutment means being arranged to prevent movement of the distal tip of said needle distally of the distal tip of said stylet.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 50 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein the length of said needle and stylet is such that in use the distal end of the needle covers said cavity and is proximal of the tip of the stylet when the proximal ends of said actuators are equidistant from the housing.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 35 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein said housing is provided with a handgrip (100) depending therefrom and arranged to present in use the users thumb in a position to urge said actuators distally.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 11 words
A device according to Claim 14, wherein the handgrip is removable.
