Abstract

Abstract A technique is provided the user of an interactive computer graphics application which allows the user to attach lines to objects such that when the objects move, the lines will rubberband to follow the object. The objects are provided with an attribute that describes their "stickiness". If an object is given the "sticky" attribute, then lines which touch or overlay the object will rubber-band to follow the object's movement. It is also possible to provide end points of lines with the "sticky" attribute so that the end points of lines can be attached to objects. Further, objects of arbitrary geometric shape can be attached to other objects of arbitrary geometric shape using the "sticky" attribute. The feature facilitates editing and revision of graphic files.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 79 words
A technique for an interactive computer graphics application which provides the user with a way to attach graphic objects displayed on a sreen such that when an object is moved, the objects attached to the selected object will follow the object, said technique comprising the steps of: selecting an object on said screen; and providing the selected object with an attribute in- dicading that objects touching or overlaying the selected object stay attached when the selected object is moved.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 79 words
A technique for an interactive computer graphics application which provides the user with a way to attach graphic objects displayed on a sreen such that when an object is moved, the objects attached to the selected object will follow the object, said technique comprising the steps of: selecting an object on said screen; and providing the selected object with an attribute in- dicading that objects touching or overlaying the selected object stay attached when the selected object is moved.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 80 words
The technique recited in claim 1 wherein an object may be moved by translation, rotation, scaling or stretching on the screen, said technique further comprising the steps of: determining if a selected object is to be moved; determining if a selected object to be moved is provided with said attribute and, if so, whether other objects touch or overlay the selected object; and moving the selected object while maintaining the attachment of objects which touch or overlay the selected object.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 74 words
The technique recited in claim 1 wherein an object may be moved by translation, rotation, scaling or stretching on the screen, said technique further comprising the steps of: determining if a selected object is to be moved; determining if other objects touch of overlay the selected object and, if so, whether any such other objects are provided with said attribute; and moving the selected object while maintaining the attachment of objects having said attribute.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
The technique recited in claim 3 wherein the selected object provided with said attribute is a line and the step of providing said attribute is performed by providing the attribute to an end of said line.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 51 words
The technique recited in claim 2 wherein the selected object provided with said attribute is an arbitrary two dimensional geometric object and the step of determining whether objects touch or overlay an object to be moved is performed by checking line objects which touch or overlay the object to be moved.
