Abstract
Abstract ethod for printing composite characters in a word processing system by multistriking two or more characters in the same character space. This method allows composite character graphics to be produced by using individual character graphics found within the character set of the output device. The method provides for the vertical and/or horizontal offsetting of the printhead between the striking of individual characters which form the composite character.

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
65 words
A method for outputting a character graphic not otherwise available on the outputting device comprising the steps of: A. defining-a table which will map an input character to two or more output character graphics; and B . mapping occurrences of the input character to the two or more output characters and treating these output charcters as a single unit wherever the composite character is manipulated.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
65 words
A method for outputting a character graphic not otherwise available on the outputting device comprising the steps of: A. defining-a table which will map an input character to two or more output character graphics; and B . mapping occurrences of the input character to the two or more output characters and treating these output charcters as a single unit wherever the composite character is manipulated.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method of Claim 1 wherein only selected input characters are mapped to multiple output characters.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
30 words
The method of Claim 2 wherein a predetermined code in the mapping table is used to indicate that there is no composite component for the input character of that level.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method of Claim 1 wherein the mapping table optionally contains vertical offset information associated with each output character so the vertical positioning of the character grap cs can be controlled.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
30 words
The method of Claim 1 wherein the mapping table optionally contains horizontal offset information associated with each output character so the horizontal position of the character graphics can be controlled.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
49 words
The method of Claim 1 wherein the composite output characters in the character mapping table are arranged in levels of decreasing widths and the mapping table contains width information associated with each output character so the centering of all output characters associated with a composite character can be controlled.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
28 words
7 . The method of Claim 1 wherein the composite output characters in the character mapping table are arranged so that the widest character appears in level 1.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
21 words
The method of Claim 7 wherein each output character component other than the widest component is centered about the widest component.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
13 words
The method of Claim 1 wherein the mapping table contains character width information.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
14 words
The method of Claim 1 wherein the mapping table contains character hammer intensity information.
