Abstract

Abstract A color detecting device comprising a head (14) supported on an arm (30) for oscillatory motion over the product (11) being color measured to render a signal responsive to the average color of the product. A height detector (44) provides a signal indicating the distance between the product and head and is used to modify the color signal accordingly. Atempera- ture sensor (39) in the head indicates an overtemperature condition for causing movement of the head away from the product. The screen (17) transparency is measured by the indicator (47, 48) to indicate when the screen is dirty.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 94 words
A color sensor for detecting the color of a product carried on a top surface. of a support, said sensor comprising: means to generate a light beam including selected color wavelengths, a head for transmitting said light beam onto said product, means supporting said head for translating movement over said support top surface along a path generally parallel to said top surface, detector means in said head for detecting the reflected light from said product; and means to analyze said reflected light to generate an output signal responsive to the color of said product.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 94 words
A color sensor for detecting the color of a product carried on a top surface. of a support, said sensor comprising: means to generate a light beam including selected color wavelengths, a head for transmitting said light beam onto said product, means supporting said head for translating movement over said support top surface along a path generally parallel to said top surface, detector means in said head for detecting the reflected light from said product; and means to analyze said reflected light to generate an output signal responsive to the color of said product.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 37 words
A color. sensor as defined in Claim 1 including means for detecting the temperatnre of said head and, means to withdraw said head from the proximity of said product when the head temperature exceeds a predetermined level.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 54 words
A color sensor as defined in Claim 1 including means for generating a distance signal responsive to the distance between the product and said head, and means to modulate said output signal responsive to said distance signal to adjust for light changes due to changes -in the distance between the product and the head.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 48 words
A color sensor as defined in claim 1 including a color calibrating target positioned to one side of said top surface and means to translate said head to a position over said target periodically and to calibrate said detector means by detecting the reflected light from said target.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
A color sensor as defined in claim 1 including means to sense and signal a buildup of dirt on said detector means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
A color sensor as defined in claim 1 including means to sense the ambient light around the color sensor and means to adjust the value of said output signal to correct for such ambient light.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 63 words
A color sensor as defined in claim 1 wherein said head includes a opaque housing for enclosing said light beam generating means with a light transmitting window to allow the light beam to strike the product, and means to circulate an air flow over the outside surface of said screen to maintain the screen free from dirt particles originating primarily fran said product.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
A color sensor as defined in claim 7 wherein means are provided for circulating said air flow through said head before it passes over the screen outside surface to cool said head.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 97 words
A color sensor for detecting the color of a product carried on the top surface of a support, said sensor comprising: a color sensing head including means for directing light of a predetermined wavelength onto said product: a first arm supporting at one end said color sensing head, a second arm rotatably fixed at one end to the other end of said first arm, means rotatably supporting said second arm other end: and, means for rotating said first arm to oscillate said head back and forth over said support to detect an average color of said product.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 97 words
A color sensor for detecting the color of a product carried on the top surface of a support, said sensor comprising: a color sensing head including means for directing light of a predetermined wavelength onto said product: a first arm supporting at one end said color sensing head, a second arm rotatably fixed at one end to the other end of said first arm, means rotatably supporting said second arm other end: and, means for rotating said first arm to oscillate said head back and forth over said support to detect an average color of said product.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 49 words
A color sensor as defined in claim 9 including: means to calibrate said color sensing head comprising a calibration target positioned to one side of said support, and means to periodically move said head over said calibration target and to activate said means to calibrate said color sensing head.
