Abstract
Abstract An optical amplifier takes the form of a semiconductor laser with coatings on its two facets. The coating takes the form of an effect coating, e.g. an oxide of Y, Gd, Nd, or La, to reduce the reflectivity and a thin interlayer, e.g. A1 2 0 3 , to enhance compatibility between the laser and the effect coating.

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
45 words
An opto-electronic device which, on at least one of its facets has a composite coating effective to reduce the reflectivity of the fact, said composite coating comprising an effect coating and an interlayer for improving the chemical compatibility between the effect coating and the device.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
45 words
An opto-electronic device which, on at least one of its facets has a composite coating effective to reduce the reflectivity of the fact, said composite coating comprising an effect coating and an interlayer for improving the chemical compatibility between the effect coating and the device.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
15 words
A device according to Claim 1, wherein the interlayer is 10 to 30 nm thick.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
16 words
A device according to Claim 2, in which the interlayer is 15 to 25 nm thick.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
30 words
A device according to any one of Claims 1, 2 or 3, in which the thickness of the interlayer is 5°/o to 15% of the thickness of the effect coating.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
A device according to Claim 4, wherein the thickness of the interlayer is 10% of the thickness of the effect coating.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
25 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the effect coating is composed of oxide of Y, 6d, Nd or La.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
A device according to Claim 1 in which the effect coating is formed of Gd 2 0 3 .
Claim 9

A device according to either Claim 6 or Claim 7 in which the interlayer is composed of A1 2 0 3 .
Claim 10
Independent Claim
34 words
A device according to any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the interlayer is a complete coating which, by itself, is too thin to exert a substantial effect on the reflectivity of the facet.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
23 words
A device according to any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the effect coating is adjusted to the thickness of substantially minimum reflectivity.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
