Abstract

Abstract The invention is directed to a daisy wheel printing unit having a wheel data memory housing therein wheel data such as kinds of characters provided in the daisy wheel by which it can be discriminated, in comparison with printing commands supplied to the printer, whether or not the characters to be printed included in the daisy wheel now being set in the printer and, if it is discriminated that the characters to be printed are not included in the daisy wheel now being set in the printer, the user of the daisy wheel printing unit can select a desired printing mode from a plurality of printing modes including treatment for the above characters before the start of the printing operation of the document.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
A printing unit as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first print control means is provided with an alarm which alerts a user of the unit that the characters to be printed cannot be printed by the printing font presently in the printer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 38 words
A printing unit as claimed in claim 1, further including a detection means for detecting the kind of the printing font presently in the printer, and supplying data with respect to that printing font to said discriminating means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A printing unit as claimed in claim 1 wherein the printing font is a daisy wheel.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 195 words
A printing system adapted for a word processor mode of operation comprising: a printer having an exchangeable printing font with a plurality of different printing symbols; storage means for storing data on symbols to be printed such as the text of a document; means for controlling the printing of a symbol by the printer from the stored data including means for determining the availability of a symbol on the printing font operatively positioned on the printer; exchange means for stopping the printing operation and indicating the necessity to exchange the printing font with another printing font having the desired symbol when the determining means indicates a symbol is not on the printing font; synthesizing means for synthesizing the symbol that is not available on the printing font from a combination of other symbols that are available on the printing font when the determining means indicates a symbol is not on the printing font, and, means for enabling the user to select between the exchange mode of printer operation and the synthesizing mode of printer operation whereby the printer will respond automatically in the mode selected when a symbol is not available on the printing font.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 69 words
A printing system as claimed in claim 5 further including spacing means for having the printer provide a blank space when a symbol is not available on the printing font thereby permitting the printer to continue the printing operation with the symbols available on the printing font'and the enabling means that permits the user to select a printing mode of operation further includes a spacing mode of printer operation.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 40 words
