Abstract

Abstract The invention involves the use of absorbable or absorb- able/nonabsorbable components to fabricate textile vascular grafts of all sizes and specifically for repair of the peripheral vascular system and for coronary bypass use. The bioabsorbable components of the graft fosters increased tissue ingrowth into the graft as compared to conventional 100% nonabsorbable grafts. Increased tissue ingrowth leads to greater patency through formation of a vascularized neointima and less tendency to be aneurysmal through formation of a suitable adventitia.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 26 words
A tubular article useful in prosthetic surgery having a plurality of fibers manufactured from an absorbable polymer, said polymer comprising at least one trimethylene carbonate linkage.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 26 words
A tubular article useful in prosthetic surgery having a plurality of fibers manufactured from an absorbable polymer, said polymer comprising at least one trimethylene carbonate linkage.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
An article of claim 1 comprising a vascular graft having a plurality of fibers manufactured from an absorbable copolymer, said copolymer comprising up to about 50% by weight of trimethylene carbonate linkages.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A graft of Claim 2 wherein the copolymer comprises about 50% by weight of glycolic or lactic acid ester linkages.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
A graft of claim 3 manufactured on a warp knitting machine, the absorbable polymer comprising more than about 50% by weight, and the remainder, if any, comprising a plurality of fibers manufactured from a nonabsorbable polymer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
A graft of claim 4 wherein the plurality of nonabsorbable polymer fibers comprises about 20 to 35% by weight of the graft.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A graft of claim 5 wherein the plurality of absorbable and nonabsorbable fibers are separately texturized by either a false twist or a knit/deknit process.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
A graft of claim 6 wherein the nonabsorbable polymer is Hytrel @ or polyethylene terephthalate.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 46 words
An article of claim 1 having a plurality of at least three different fibers, the first and second fibers manufactured from two different absorbable polymers, at least one of said polymers comprising at least one trimethylene;carbonate linkage, and the third fiber manufactured from a nonabsorbable polymer.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 40 words
A vascular graft having at least three different components, each of said components respectively manufactured from a plurality of each of said first, second and third fibers of claim 8, and then knitted or woven together in a concentric relationship.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 61 words
An article of claim 1 or 2 or 7 or 8 comprising an external support, said support having at least one fiber manufactured from an absorbable polymer, said polymer comprising at least one trimethylene carbonate linkage, said fiber helically wrapped and permanently attached to said article, the frequency between each adjacent coil of said helix being about 0.5 to 3.0 mm.
