Abstract

Abstract A fixture is disclosed suitable for inserting metallic articles into glass. The fixture is made of a silicon nitride based material, is generally cylindrical in shape and has one end capable of receiving a holding means and the other end defining an opening capable of receiving a metallic glass sealing article. The density of the fixture is from about 85% to about 97% of the theoretical density of the silicon nitride based material. A method is disclosed for inserting a glass sealing metallic article into glass. The method involves first forming a fixture for gripping the article. The fixture is made of a silicon nitride based material and has a composition consisting essentially of in percent by weight, from about 0.5% to about 4% aluminum oxide, from about 4% to about 8% yttrium oxide, and the balance silicon nitride, and a density range as given above. The article is releasably secured to the fixture and induction heated to a temperature sufficient to enable the embedding of the article into glass, followed by embedding the article into glass and thereafter removing the fixture from the article.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 71 words
A fixture suitable for inserting metallic articles into glass, said fixture being made of a silicon nitride based material and being generally cylindrical in shape having one end capable of receiving a holding means and the other end defining an opening capable of receiving a metallic glass sealing article, the density of said fixture being from about 85% to about 97% of the theoretical density of said silicon nitride based material.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 71 words
A fixture suitable for inserting metallic articles into glass, said fixture being made of a silicon nitride based material and being generally cylindrical in shape having one end capable of receiving a holding means and the other end defining an opening capable of receiving a metallic glass sealing article, the density of said fixture being from about 85% to about 97% of the theoretical density of said silicon nitride based material.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
A fixture of claim 1 in which said silicon nitride based material consists essentially of, in percent by weight, from about 0.5% to about 4% aluminum oxide, from about 4% to about 8% yttrium oxide, and the balance silicon nitride.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 131 words
A method for inserting a glass sealing metallic article into glass, said method comprising: a) forming a fixture for gripping said article, said fixture being made of a silicon nitride based material and having a composition consisting essentially of in percent by weight, from about 0.5% to about 4% aluminum oxide, from about 4% to about 8% yttrium oxide, and the balance silicon nitride, and a density of from about 85% to about 97% of the theoretical density of said silicon nitride based material; b) contacting said article with said fixture to releasably secure said article to said fixture; c) induction heating said article at a temperature sufficient to enable the embedding of said article into glass; d) embedding said article into glass; and e) removing said fixture from said article.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method of claim 3 wherein said article is embedded in glass which is at a temperature above the strain point of said glass.
