Abstract

Abstract 57 A method of and apparatus for mapping digital video sample values from a first sample domain to a second sample domain using a mapping function which involves a change in image size, for example, for a digital video effects unit, is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an address generator (2) and a processor (4) for computing, for each sample position in the second sample domain, the position of a point in the first sample domain which using the mapping function would map onto thatsample position in the second sample domain, and an interpolator (6) for obtaining from available input sample values an interpolated sample value for that point in the first sample domain, the interpolated sample value being used as the sample value for that sample position in that second sample domain.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 129 words
A method of mapping digital video sample values from a first sample domain (A) to a second sample domain (B) using a mapping function which involves a change in image size, the method being characterised by, for each sample position (b i+1 ) in said second sample domain (B): computing the position of a respective point (a.) in said first sample domain (A) which using said mapping function would map onto said sample position ( b i+1 ) in said second sample domain (B); obtaining by interpolation from available input sample values an interpolated sample value for said point (a.) in said first sample domain (A); and using said interpolated sample value as the sample value for said sample position (b i+1 ) in said second sample domain (B).
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said change in image size involves compression.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein said compression is in two dimensions.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 50 words
A method according to claim 3 wherein said position of said point (a.) in said first sample domain (A) is expressed as two residuals (x , y ) which respectively represent the horizontal and vertical distances of said point from an adjacent sample position in said first sample domain (A).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method according to claim 3 or claim 4 wherein said mapping function is dynamically changing.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 70 words
A method according to claim 3, claim 4 or claim 5 wherein said interpolation uses a moving matrix of said input sample values, and there is derived for said position of said point (a.) in said first sample domain (A) a plurality of weighting coefficients, each said input sample value is multiplied by a respective said weighting coefficient, and the resulting products are summed to form said interpolated sample value.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 29 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said interpolated sample value is supplied to a memory (1) for storage prior to display, recording or transmission.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method according to claim 7 wherein said memory (1) is a field store.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 136 words
Apparatus for mapping digital video sample values from a first sample domain (A) to a second sample domain (B) using a mapping function which involves a change in image size, the apparatus being characterised by: means (2, 4) for computing, for each sample position (b i+1 ) in said second sample domain (B), the position of a respective point (a.) in said first sample domain (A) which using said mapping function would map onto said sample position (b i+1 ) in said second sample domain (B); and an interpolator (6) for obtaining from available input sample values an interpolated sample value for said point (a i ) in said first sample domain (A); said interpolated sample value being used as the sample value for said sample position (b i+1 ) in said second sample domain (B).
Claim 11
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 16 words
Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein said change in image size involves compression in two dimensions.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 105 words
Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein said means (2, 4) for computing comprise an address generator (2) for successively generating the addresses (X+x , Y+y r ) of points in said second sample domain (B) to which sample positions in said first sample domain (A) map using said mapping function, and a processor (4) for deriving from each said address (X+x , Y+y r ) the address (x b , y b ) of said point (a i ) in said first sample domain (A) which using said mapping function would map onto said sample position (b i+1 ) in said second sample domain (B).
