Abstract

Abstract Novel desmutagenic substances and their production are disclosed. The desmutagenic substances are a fibrous food constituent separated from corn fibres. These substances inactivate mutagens such as nitroallene and food pyrolysate mutagens. They may be produced by removing starch, protein or other material from corn fibre by enzymic, chemical or physical treatment or a combination thereof.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 22 words
A desmutagenic substance which is a fibrous food constituent and contains as a principal component hardly digestible substances separated from corn fibres.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 22 words
A desmutagenic substance which is a fibrous food constituent and contains as a principal component hardly digestible substances separated from corn fibres.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
The desmutagenic substance of claim 1 in which the fibrous constituent of food has a NDF (Neutral Detergent Fibre) value of 50% or more and a grain size of not more than 16 mesh (Japanese standard).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A process for the production of a desmutagenic substance according to claim 1 or claim 2 which comprises subjecting corn fibres as a starting material to an enzyme treatment, chemical treatment or physical treatment or a combination thereof to remove starch, protein or other separatable material therefrom, thereby producing said fibrous food constituent.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
A process according to claim 3 in which the enzyme treatment of the corn fibres is carried out using one or more amylolytic, proteolytic, lipolytic or cellulolytic enzymes or a complex enzyme.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process according to claim 3 in which the chemical treatment of the corn fibres is carried out using an aqueous solution of alkali or acid.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process according to claim 3 in which the chemical treatment of the corn fibres is carried out with the addition of a surface activating agent.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process according to claim 3 in which the physical treatment of the corn fibres is carried out using a grinding machine and a sifting machine.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 35 words
A food product or pharmaceutical composition which contains as an additive a desmutagenic substance according to claim 1 or claim 2 or when produced by a method according to any of claims 3 to 7.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 45 words
Material according to claim 1 or claim 2 or when produced by a method according to any of claims 3 to 7 for use as a desmutagenic substance or for use in the manufacture of a food product or pharmaceutical composition according to claim 8.
