Abstract
Abstract The automatic system serves for extracting individual storage bins (10) from locations in a two dimensional array (3) and replacing each extracted bin into any other vacant location in that array or in some other location, possibly a second two dimensional array opposed to the first array and spaced from it by a distance only slightly greater than the length of the bin. The bins are engaged by the extractor (20) along their sides.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim
86 words
A storage and retrieval system comprising: (a) a plurality of storage bins (10) arranged in a first array (2), the side walls of each bin having engagable means (12) located near both ends of each side wall; (b) means for extracting a bin from the array, the extractor means including means (20) for engaging the engagable means on the side walls of the bin, and (c) controllable platform means (5,20) associated with the extractor means, for positioning the extractor means adjacent the bin to be extracted.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

A storage and retrieval system comprising: (a) a plurality of storage bins (10) arranged in a first array (2), the side walls of each bin having engagable means (12) located near both ends of each side wall; (b) means for extracting a bin from the array, the extractor means including means (20) for engaging the engagable means on the side walls of the bin, and (c) controllable platform means (5,20) associated with the extractor means, for positioning the extractor means adjacent the bin to be extracted.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
65 words
The storage and retrieval system of claim I wherein the engagable means (12) are openings through the side walls of the bin and wherein the means for engaging include extendable arms (30) located along either side of extractor means (20) and capable of moving in parallel planes perpendicular to the plane of the array, each arm including finger block means (50,51,52,53,54) for engaging the openings,
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
32 words
The storage and retrieval system of claim 2 wherein each arm also includes a chain drive (44) attached to the finger block means for moving the finger block means along the arm.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
48 words
The storage and retrieval system of claim 3 further including a finger support plate (48) movable in a plane parallel to the plane of movement of the arm and having a central opening (49) therethrough, for guiding the orientation of the fingers (51,53) on the finger block means.
