Abstract

Abstract A medical instrument is provided with a chemiluminescent light source for inspection and examination of a body. The light source comprises at least two compartments separated by a barrier, each compartment filled with a suitable fluorescing component, such that by breaking the barrier between the compartments and causing admixing of the components, a chemical reaction occurs which produces the chemiluminescent effect In a particular embodiment of the present invention, an endoscopic instrument such as a vaginal speculum, is provided having cooperating upper and lower dilator blades pivotally connected to each other, a means associated with at least one dilator blade for releasably engaging thereto a chemiluminescent light source adapted to direct its light intermediate the dilator blades in their spaced apart position to illuminate the body cavity being examined.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 35 words
A medical examination light for attachment to a medical instrument said light comprising chemiluminescent light means for generating fluorescent light, and attachment means for removably securing said light to a portion of said medical instrument.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 35 words
A medical examination light for attachment to a medical instrument said light comprising chemiluminescent light means for generating fluorescent light, and attachment means for removably securing said light to a portion of said medical instrument.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 90 words
A light according to claim 1, comprising : a) a light transmitting body, a portion of the outer surface of which is adapted to cooperate with a contoured surface of said instrument, said portion being provided with means for attachment to said instrument adjacent said surface; b) at least two hermetically sealed compartments within said body, said compartments being separated by a wall, each compartment containing a fluorescing component capable of producing fluorescent light upon the admixture of the components, said wall being rupturable to permit admixture of said components.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 49 words
A light according to claim 2, wherein means for ruperting said wall comprises a plunger, a portion of which extends into one of said compartments, said portion of said plunger being provided with a point for piercing said wall and sealing means for maintaining hermetic sealing of said compartment
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
A light according to claim 3, wherein said sealing means comprises an 0-ring seated in a slot formed in said portion of said plunger or a bead formed on the surface of said portion of said plunger.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 46 words
A light according to claim 2, wherein said wall is the wall of a frangible tube or ampoule containing a fluorescing component and arranged within a second deformable compartment containing another fluorescing component, said tube or ampoule being easily ruptured by pressure on the deformable compartment.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
A light- according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the attachment means comprises means for adhesively or mechanically securing the light to the medical instrument.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 57 words
A light according to claim 6, wherein means for mechanically securing the light to the instrument comprises means allowing the light to be snap-fitted between upstanding ribs on the instrument, means allowing the light to be slidably fitted within flanges on the instrument or a sleeve that can be fitted over an elongate portion of the instrument
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 63 words
A medical instrument including an examination light, comprising : a) a medical instrument body adapted to receive a light source; and b) a chemiluminescent light source attached to said medical instrument, said light source comprising a light transmitting body adapted to fit adjacent a contoured surface of said medical instrument body and provided with attachment means for attachment to said medical instrument body.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 63 words
A medical instrument including an examination light, comprising : a) a medical instrument body adapted to receive a light source; and b) a chemiluminescent light source attached to said medical instrument, said light source comprising a light transmitting body adapted to fit adjacent a contoured surface of said medical instrument body and provided with attachment means for attachment to said medical instrument body.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 25 words
A medical instrument according to claim 8, wherein the chemiluminescent on light source is a light according to any one of claims 1 to 7.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 12 words
A medical instrument according to claim 9 which is an endoscopic instrument.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 65 words
A endoscopic instrument according to claim 10, comprising a body, a plurality of dilator members extending from said body and attachment means associated with at least one of said dilator members for securing thereto the chemiiuminescent light source, said chemiluminescent light source being secured to said at least one dilator member such as to direct its light between said dilator members in their extended direction.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 65 words
An instrument according to claim 11, wherein said plurality of dilator members includes cooperating upper and lower dilator blades arranged to engage an opening in a body and to widen said opening upon the separation of said dilator members, said instrument preferably including a riser means adjustable on said lower dilator member and a pivot on said riser means pivotally carrying said upper dilator blade.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 22 words
A method for examining a body wherein there is used a medical instrument according to any one of claims 8 to 12.
