Abstract

Abstract A movement monitoring device for monitoring the movement of items past of through a work station wherein the items move synchronously with a ribbon through or past the work station. The transport of the items is monitored by a detector which monitors the linear movement of the ribbon. Signals from the detector can be used to activate the work station at intervals corresponding to the passage of the items.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 60 words
Apparatus in which an item is moved synchronously with a ribbon or tape through or relative to a work station, characterised in that the movement of the item is monitored by a detector (162) which monitors the linear movement of the ribbon or tape (29) and produces an output signal a paramenter of which is proportional to the ribbon movement.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 60 words
Apparatus in which an item is moved synchronously with a ribbon or tape through or relative to a work station, characterised in that the movement of the item is monitored by a detector (162) which monitors the linear movement of the ribbon or tape (29) and produces an output signal a paramenter of which is proportional to the ribbon movement.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that the detector (162) cooperates with the ribbon (29) to provide signals from which can be derived timed control signals for repeatedly and selectively energising the work station.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the detector is an opto-encoder, (162) which includes an apertured disc (158) driven in rotation to interrupt a light beam directed from a light source towards a photo- detector.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 51 words
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3 characterised in that the encoder includes a friction drive wheel (156) )which is springloaded to engage the ribbon as it passes around a guide roller (148) and also to engage a roller (160) on the axis of the apertured encoding disc (158).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 4, characterised in that the roller (160) on the axis of the disc drives the disc 5 through a non-return drive clutch.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, characterised in that ribbon itself is perforated or printed to provide interrupts for an optical encoder detector.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 65 words
A postal franking machine including apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein the items are postal items and the ribbon is an inked ribbon, characterised in that the adhesion created between the postal item and the ribbon by the act of thermal printing is utilised to cause the postal item transport to drive the ribbon from a supply spool (28) to a delivery spool (30).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 64 words
A machine as claimed in Claim 7, characterised in that the inked ribbon (29) passes around a guide roller located adjacent a window (154) in the cassette wall which is disposed adjacent the detector drive (156) when the cassette is located in the franking machine and the detector is driven by frictional engagement with the ribbon as the latter passes around the guide roller.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 63 words
A machine as claimed in Claim 7 or Claim 8, characterised in that the inserted cassette is springloaded to engage the detector drive instead of vice versa, and in that means for loading the inked ribbon cassette into the machine includes means for guiding said cassette into a location in which the ribbon is accurately positioned in operational relationship to the detector drive.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 71 words
Apparatus according to any of Claims 7 to 9, in which the ribbon or tape is located in a cassette and wherein the ribbon passes around a guide roller located adjacent a window in the cassette wall which is disposed adjacent a detector drive means when the cassette is located in position and the detector is driven by frictional engagement with the ribbon as the latter passes around the guide roller.
