Abstract

Abstract The combustion, especially for lean mixture, in an internal combustion engine is improved by providing an additional air introducing device (9, 10). The device comprises an air by-pass pipe (10) introducing additional air independently from airflow through an intake manifold (2) and having its outlet in the manifold (2) at the vicinity of an intake valve (2a) and an air by-pass valve (9) for adjusting the flow rate of the additional air through the by-pass pipe (10) according to the operational condition of the engine. Thereby, in the suction stroke of a cylinder, the additional air stagnated at the vicinity of the intake valve is at first sucked and the mixture supplied by a fuel injector follows. Accordingly, the stratification of combustible fluid is performed within the cylinder, in which an ignition plug is exposed by an upper phase formed by the mixture.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 242 words
A fuel control apparatus for an internal combustion engine comprising air-fuel ratio sensing means (12) for detecting an air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture actually burnt in a cylinder (1) of the engine, fuel supplying means (7) provided in an intake pipe (2) of the cylinder (1) for supplying an air-fuel mixture to be burnt in the cylinder by atomizing a fuel and mixing it with an air sucked into the intake pipe, and control means (18) for receiving signals indicative of an operational condition of the engine and producing control signals in accordance with which said fuel supplying means adjusts the amount of the fuel to be atomized so as to make the air-fuel ratio of the actually burnt mixture follow to a reference value of the air-fuel ratio predetermined in response to the operational condition of the engine, characterized in that there are further provided additional air introducing means (9, 10) which introduce an additional air into the intake pipe (2) at the vicinity of an intake port (2a) of the cylinder (2) independently from the air sucked through the intake pipe (2), whereby, during a suction stroke of the cylinder, the additional air is first sucked into the cylinder and then the air-fuel mixture furnished by said fuel supplying means (7, 8) follows thereto, and that the amount of the additional air introduced is controlled in accordance with the degree of load which the engine is required to produce.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 242 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words

Claim 4
Dependent Claim 70 words
A fuel control apparatus for an internal combustion engine as defined in claim 1, wherein said amount of the additional air introduced is so controlled that the air-fuel ratio detected by said sensing means becomes equal to a theoretical air-fuel ratio in the light load range and the range of acceleration and deceleration under the partial load and much higher than the theoretical air-fuel ratio in the middle load range.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 58 words
A fuel control apparatus for an internal combustion engine as defined in claim 1, wherein the introduction of the additional air is stopped and the mixture of the air-fuel ratio lower than the theoretical value is furnished by said fuel supplying means (7, 8) when the engine is required to produce the maximum output under the full load.
