Abstract

Abstract A reclinable seat for use in vehicles provides two systems enabling an occupant to adopt reclining postures. The seat comprises a bottom part and a back support part rotatable together about an axis in a support frame to be fixed in the vehicle. The axis is transverse to the seat and adjacent to the bottom part. enabling the seat to be rotated bodily about the axis into reclining positions. The back support part is pivoted to the bottom part so that it can be tilted separately into reclining positions. Separate control means are provided respectively for locating the seat in positions angularly spaced about the axis and for locating the back support part in angularly spaced positions relative to the bottom part. Limiting means are provided for limiting the permitted angle between the back support and the bottom part, the limiting means being influenced by rotation of the bottom part about the axis so as to reduce the permitted angle progressively as the bottom part is rotated rearwardly from its normal upright position.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 196 words
A reclinable vehicle seat comprising a bottom part (1) and a back support part (2), connected together for rotation together about a single axis (3) transverse to the seat and adjacent to the bottom part (1) between a normal substantially upright position and rearwardly inclined reclining positions, the connection (13) between the parts (1, 2) enabling the back support part (2) to be tilted rearwardly through a permitted angle from its normal position relative to the bottom part, first control means (6) for locating the bottom part releasably in the normal substantially upright position or in reclining positions spaced about the axis (3) and second control means (14) for locating the back support part (2) releasably in its normal position in relation to the bottom part or in rearward tilted positions within the permitted angle, characterised in that limiting means (23, 24) are provided for limiting the rearward tilting of the back support part (2) when the bottom part (1) is in a reclining position, the limiting means (23, 24) being influenced by the positioning of the bottom part (1) so as to reduce the permitted angle progressively with increasing recline of the bottom part (1).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 196 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 58 words
A reclinable vehicle seat as claimed in Claim 1 which is mounted on a support frame to be secured in a vehicle, the support frame including a first member (3) defining the transverse axis and a second member (4) to engage the bottom part (1) so as to locate and support it in its normal substantially upright position.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 60 words
A reclinable vehicle seat as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 characterised in that the first and second control means (6, 14) each comprises a fluid-controlled piston and double-ended cylinder with a fluid passage (10) between its ends, a valve (11, 17) in each passage (10) and first and second operating elements (12, 18) for opening the respective valves.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 44 words
A reclinable vehicle seat as claimed in Claim 3 including an interlink (25) between the first and second operating elements (12, 18) whereby the second operating element (18) will open the valves (11, 17) of both the first and second control means (6, 14).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 146 words
A reclinable vehicle seat as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that the limiting means comprises a stop member (23) connected to the bottom part (1) by link means (l g , 20, 21, 22) and a complementary part (24) rigidly connected to the back support part (2), the link means being arranged so that the stop member (23) clears the complementary part (24) when the bottom part (1) is in its normal substantially upright position but so that rearward rotation of the bottom part (1) from its normal position moves the stop member (23) to positions in which it will be engaged by the complementary part (24) when the back support part (2) is tilted rearwardly relative to the bottom part (1) and will thereby limit the angle of such tilting, the limitation being progressively increased with increasing rearward rotation of the bottom part.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A reclinable vehicle seat as claimed in Claim 5 wherein the stop member is a roller (23) and the complementary part is a cam (24).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A reclinable vehicle seat as claimed in any preceding claim in which the connection between the back support part (2) and the bottom part (1) coincides with the transverse axis.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
A reclinable vehicle seat as claimed in any preceding claim characterised by a leg support part extending downwardly adjacent to the front edge of the bottom part.
