Abstract

Abstract Halogen-containing organic compounds e.g. polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) are destroyed by being contacted in gaseous form in the absence of oxygen to AI, Mg, Si, Ti or Be having a high specific area, and an area of 0.1 - 65 m 2 of metal surface per gram of organic compound to be destroyed, at temperatures of 450 - 650°C for times up to 50 seconds. The PCB's are generally entrained in an inert carrier gas. The method is suitable for continuous operation. When the metal becomes deactivated by reason of a carbonaceous deposit on the surface, it can be regenerated, e.g. by treatment with sodium hydroxide solution.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 70 words
A method of destroying halogen-containing organic compounds by reaction with a metal in the solid state at elevated temperature, characterized by contacting the compounds in gaseous form in the absence of oxygen with a metal selected from Al, Mg, Si, Ti and Be, and alloys thereof having a high specific surface area at a temperature of at least 450 0 C and a contact time of up to 50 seconds.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 70 words
A method of destroying halogen-containing organic compounds by reaction with a metal in the solid state at elevated temperature, characterized by contacting the compounds in gaseous form in the absence of oxygen with a metal selected from Al, Mg, Si, Ti and Be, and alloys thereof having a high specific surface area at a temperature of at least 450 0 C and a contact time of up to 50 seconds.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the organic compounds are chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 106 words
A method of destroying chlorinated hydrocarbons by the steps of:- i) bringing the chlorinated hydrocarbons in the gas phase and in the absence of oxygen into contact with a metal selected from Al, Mg, Si, Ti and Be and alloys thereof at a temperature of 450 C and a contact time of 0.1 - 50 seconds, the metal having a high specific area, whereby the chlorinated hydrocarbons are destroyed and a deactivating carbonaceous deposit is formed on the surface of the metal, ii) regenerating the metal by removing the carbonaceous deposit from the surface thereof, and iii) re-using the regenerated metal to destroy more chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Independent Claim 25 words
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the compounds are entrained in gaseous form in an inert carrier gas.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 25 words
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the metal having a high specific surface area is aluminium alloy chips.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 21 words
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the contact temperature is from 550°C to 650°C.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 33 words
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein there is provided from 1 to 20 m 2 of active metal surface per gram of compound to be destroyed.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the metal is regenerated by treatment with sodium hydroxide solution.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the metal is regenerated by exposure at elevated temperature to oxygen followed by chlorine.
