Abstract
Abstract A surface position sensor is devised which utilizes a beam of energy (80-86) reflected from a surface (40) through an optical receiver (46) to a detector (48) wherein an energy blocking member (75) having a receiver aperture (76) permits only energy substantially parallel to the optic axis (80) of the optical receiver to pass to the detector (Fig. 2).

Claim 1
Independent Claim
94 words
Surface position sensor comprising: Energy emitting means (32;102), emitting energy to a reflecting surface (40;100); receiving means (46;160-176) having an optic axis (80;152) positioned to receive energy reflected from the surface; and energy detecting means (48;178) positioned to receive energy, the position of the received energy on the detecting means varying with the position of the surface, characterized by energy blocking means (75;162) having an aperture (76; 164) therein positioned along the optic axis (80;152) so that only energy reflected from the surface (40;100) substantially parallel to the optic axis passes through the aperture.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
65 words
Sensor according to claim 1, characterized by energy directing means (34;110-114) for directing energy from the energy emitting means (32;102) to said surface (40;100) along a first axis which makes a first angle with said surface and the optic axis (80) of said receiving means (46;160-176) makes an angle with the surface equal to the first angle on a side opposite from the first axis.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
44 words
Sensor according to claim 2, characterized in that the surface can move along a line (70; 133) perpendicular to the surface (40;100) and the position of the energy on the energy detecting means (48;178) changes with changes of surface position along the reference axis.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
28 words
Sensor according to claim 1, characterized by means (208-270;Fig. 4) connected to the detecting means (200) to provide an output signal indicative of the position of the surface.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
95 words
Sensor according to claim 4, characterized in that the detecting means (200) has first and second ends (202,204) and produces a first signal (A) which varies with the distance between the position of the energy and the first of the ends, produces a second signal (B) which varies with the distance between the position of the energy and the second of the ends and wherein the means (208-270) connected to the detecting means (200) produces the output signal (270) in accordance with where K is a factor for scaling the output in terms of distance.
