Abstract

Abstract A vehicle engine mounting arrangement comprises a mount (13) between the engine (11) and body (10) of the vehicle and a support (14) between the body and suspension system (12) of the vehicle. The mount (13) comprises a flexible annulus (17) and a gas-tight chamber (18). The support (14) comprises a flexible annulus (21) and includes a gas-tight chamber (23). The two gas-tight chambers are in gas communication with each other via a pipe (24). Changes of pressure which are communicated between the chambers act to tend to bring into phase the vibrational movements of the body and engine and hence reduce shake.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 261 words
I . A mounting arrangement for a vehicle engine of the kind comprising means (13) for mounting the engine (11) of the vehicle to the body (10) of the vehicle, which mounting means comprises a first fluid-tight chamber (18) of variable volume which contains fluid and which is arranged between the engine and the body so that the weight of the engine tends to reduce the volume of the chamber, means (14) for supporting the body on the suspension system (12) of the vehicle, which supporting means includes a second fluid-tight chamber (23) of variable volume, which chamber contains fluid and is arranged so that the load of the body on the suspension system tends to reduce the volume of the chamber, and a fluid communication (24) between the first and second chambers, characterised in that the fluid is a gas and relative movement between the engine (11) an body (10) or between the body (10) and suspension system (12) alters the pressure of the gas in one of the chambers (18, 23), which change in gas pressure is communicated to the other of the chambers (18, 23), the arrangement acting to tend to bring into phase the vibrational movements of the body and engine, the effective pressurised areas (as herein defined) of the mounting means (13) and supporting means (14) being approximately equal and the natural frequency of vibration of the body on the supporting means without the second chamber being approximately equal to the natural frequency of vibration of the engine on the effective gas spring (as herein defined).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 17 words
2, A mounting arrangement as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the gas pressure is greater than atmospheric.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the height of the first chamber (18) is greater than the height of the second chamber (23).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the gas communication (24) between the two chambers includes restricting means for damping the flow of gas therethrough.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the mounting means (13) comprises a flexible resilient member (17) connected between the body (10) and the engine (11).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in claim 5 wherein when the first chamber (18) contains gas under pressure, the gas provides a substantial part of the total stiffness of the mounting means (13).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 47 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6 wherein when the first chamber (18) contains gas under pressure and the engine (11) and body (10) are in static equilibrium, the dynamic stiffness of the mounting means (13) is low compared with its static stiffness.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 32 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the supporting means (14) comprises an element (21) of flexible resilient material connected between the body' (10) and the suspension system (12).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in claim 8 Wherein the second chamber (23) is bounded in part by the said element (21).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 35 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in claim 8 or claim 9 wherein the supporting means (14) comprises a second element (37) of flexible resilient material connected between the body (10) and the suspension system (12).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 23 words
A mounting arrangement as claimed in claim 10 wherein the second chamber (38) is hounded in part hy the said second element (37).
