Abstract

Abstract An antenna assembly is provided for use in locating buried objects, particularly long thin objects such as pipes can be located, determining the position, and ascertaining the pipe direction by taking measurements from a single point, without mechanical movement of the antenna, and allowing a better suppression of spurious signals and reduction in false indications; which assembly has a plurality of antenna arms adapted and arranged to transmit and receive radiation into the ground and is characterised in that the arms have, on at least the surface nearest the ground, a cladding of a substantially lossless dielectric material, the relative permitivity of said dielectric being at least 3.5 and the thickness of said coating being at least d /20 where d is the wavelength of lowest frequency of the radiation to be transmitted from the antenna.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
An antenna assembly for use in transmitting and receiving ground penetrating radiation having a plurality of antenna arms adapted and arranged to transmit and receive radiation into the ground characterised in that the arms have, on at least the surface nearest the ground, a cladding of a substantially lossless dielectric material, the relative permitivity of said dielectric being at least 3.5 and the thickness of said cladding being at least λ d /20 wheren d is the wavelength of lowest frequency of the radiation to be transmitted from the antenna.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 90 words
An antenna assembly for use in transmitting and receiving ground penetrating radiation having a plurality of antenna arms adapted and arranged to transmit and receive radiation into the ground characterised in that the arms have, on at least the surface nearest the ground, a cladding of a substantially lossless dielectric material, the relative permitivity of said dielectric being at least 3.5 and the thickness of said cladding being at least λ d /20 wheren d is the wavelength of lowest frequency of the radiation to be transmitted from the antenna.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the arms are substantially planar and have parallel upper and lower surfaces.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
An assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 2 wherein the antenna are two-terminal antennae.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
An assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the assembly comprises at least twelve antenna arms.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
An assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the antenna arms are spirally arranged around a common point.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 51 words
An assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the thickness of the cladding ranges from λ d /5 (where λ d is as defined in claim 1) to λ/3 where is the wavelength of the highest frequency of the radiation to be transmitted from the antenna assembly.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 18 words
An antenna assembly according to claim 1 and substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
