An ultrasonic coagulation monitor, comprising a housing (14), a piezoelectric crystal (24, 112) mounted in said housing (14), means (12) for driving said crystal (24,112) at or near its resonant frequency, characterized by a timer (50) and by means (44, 46) for measuring the resonant voltage in a circuit, the means (44, 46) being connected to (a) said driving means (12) and to said crystal (24,112) or to (b) another piezoelectric crystal (114) which is mounted a predetermined distance apart from said crystal (112) to define a cavity (110) therebetween, and means for turning off said timer (50) upon said voltage reaching a predetermined level.
