Abstract
Abstract A high modulus endoprosthetic device comprising a polyaryletherketone and optionally reinforcement which may be fibrous, particulate or relatively massive. Loss of reinforcement to the body tissues may be reduced by provision of polymer rich layer at the surface of the device, particularly in locations where reinforcement is exposed at the surface or is likely to be exposed due to tissue or other abrasion.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim
46 words
A high modulus prosthetic device comprising a reinforcing component and a polymeric component comprising a polyaryletherketone, said polyaryletherketone being disposed over at least part of the surface of the reinforcement in a form adapted to prevent contact of the reinforcement with body tissues when in situ.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
13 words
A device according to claim 1 in which the reinforcement comprises carbon fibre.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
48 words
A method of making a device according to claim 1 or claim 2, which comprises forming reinforcement-containing-polyaryletherketone to a desired shape by a process comprising the softening of the polyaryletherketone whereby the latter forms a body-tissue impermeable layer over at least part of the surface of the reinforcement.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
42 words
A method according to claim 3, comprising the further steps of cutting, abrading or otherwise forming the shaped device whereby previously coated reinforcement is exposed, and subsequently applying body-tissue-compatible polymer to the so exposed reinforcement to form a new body-tissue impermeable layer.
