Liquid crystal composition

Claim 2

A two frequency addressing liquid crystal composition comprising a plurality of liquid crystal compounds mixed such that the absolute value of a dielectric anisotropy ΔεL of the composition, measured at a low frequency 1/10 a cross-over frequency of the composition, is larger than the absolute value of a dielectric anisotropy ΔεH of the composition measured at a high frequency 10 times the cross-over frequency.

Claim 3

A composition according to claim 1, characterized in that a ratio |ΔεL|/|ΔεH| is not more than 5.

Claim 4

A composition according to claim i, characterized in that a ratio |ΔεL|/|ΔεH| is 1.2 to 5.

Claim 5

A composition according to claim 1, comprising: a first liquid crystal material of at least one member selected from the group consisting of liquid crystal compounds represented by general formulas: and (characterized in that each of R, R 1 and R 2 is independently an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms); a second liquid crystal material of at least one member selected from the group consisting of liquid crystal compounds represented by general formulas: and (characterized in that each R is independently an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms); a third liquid crystal material of at least one member selected from the group consisting of liquid crystal compounds represented by general formulas: and (characterized in that each of R and R 2 is independently an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms); and, optionally, a fourth liquid crystal material of at least one member selected from the group consisting of liquid crystal compounds represented by general formulas: and (characterized in that each of R, R 1 and R 2 is independently an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms).

Claim 6

A composition according to claim 4, characterized in that the composition contains, based on a total weight thereof, 30 to 70% by weight of the first liquid crystal material, 2 to 60% by weight of the second liquid crystal material, 2 to 15% by weight of the third liquid crystal material, and 0 to 15% by weight of the fourth liquid crystal material.

Claim 7

A composition according to claim 5, characterized in that the first liquid crystal material contains at least one liquid crystal compound of general formula (I).

Claim 8

A composition according to claim 6, characterized in that the first liquid crystal material contains at least one liquid crystal compound of general formula (I), in an amount of 20 to 70% by weight.

Claim 9

A composition according to claim 5, characterized in that the third liquid crystal material contains at least one liquid crystal compound of general formula (XV).

Claim 10

A composition according to claim 8, characterized in that the third liquid crystal material contains at least one liquid crystal compound of general formula (XV), in an amount of 2 to 15% by weight.

Claim 11

A composition according to claim 5, characterized in that the first liquid crystal material contains at least one liquid crystal compound of general formula (I), and at least one liquid crystal compound of general formula (II); the second liquid crystal material contains at least one liquid crystal compound of general formula (VII), at least one compound of general formula (VIII) and at least one compound of general formula (XIII); the third liquid crystal material contains at least one compound of general formula (XV); and the fourth liquid crystal material contains at least one compound of general formula (XVI).

Claim 12

A composition according to claim 10, characterized in that the compounds of general formulas (I) and (II) are contained in a total amount of 30 to 40% by weight; the compounds of general formulas (VII), (VIII) and (XIII) are contained in a total amount of 40 to 50% by weight; the compound of general formula (XV) is contained in an amount of 5 to 15% by weight; and the compound of general formula (XVI) is contained in an amount of 5 to 15% by weight.

A composition according to claim 5, characterized in that the compound of general formula (I) is contained in an amount of 20 to 70%, the compound of general formula (II) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, the compound of general formula (III) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, the compound of general formula (IV) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, the compound of general formula (V) is contained in an amount of 0 to 50%, the compound of general formula (VII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (VIII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (IX) is contained in an amount of 0 to 10%, the compound of general formula (X) is contained in an amount of 0 to 15%, the compound of general formula (XI) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (XII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 10%, the compound of general formula (XIII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (XIV) is contained in an amount of 2 to 15%, the compound of general formula (XV) is contained in an amount of 2 to 15%, the compound of general formula (XVI) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, and the compound of general formula (XVII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 15%.

Claim 14

A composition according to claim 4, characterized in that the second liquid crystal material contains at least one compound of general formula (VI).

Claim 15

A composition according to claim 13, characterized in that the first liquid crystal material contains at least one compound of general formula (I); the second liquid crystal material further contains at least one compound of general formula (VII) and at least one compound of general formula (VIII); and the third liquid crystal material contains at least one compound of general formula (XV).

Claim 16

A composition according to claim 14, characterized in that the second liquid crystal material further contains at least one compound of general formula (XIII), and the fourth liquid crystal material contains at least one compound of general formula (XVI).

Claim 17

A composition according to claim 3 or 4, characterized in that the composition contains, based on a total weight thereof, 40 to 60% by weight of the first liquid crystal material, 2 to 40% by weight of the second liquid crystal material, 2 to 15% by weight of the third liquid crystal material, and 0 tc 15% by weight of the fourth liquid crystal material.

Claim 18

A composition according to claim 16, characterized in that the second liquid crystal material contains 2 to 20% of at least one compound of general formula (VI).

Claim 19

A composition according to claim 17, characterized in that the composition contains 10 to 2CX of at least one compound of general formula (VI), and 5 to 20% of at least one compound of general formula (VII) as the second liquid crystal material.

A composition according to claim 13, characterized in that the compound of general formula (I) is contained in an amount of 20 to 70%, the compound of general formula (II) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, the compound of general formula (III) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, the compound of general formula (IV) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, the compound of general formula (V) is contained in an amount of 0 to 50%, the compound of general formula (VI) is contained in an amount of 2 to 20%, the compound of general formula (VII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (VIII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (IX) is contained in an amount of 0 to 10%, the compound of general formula (X) is contained in an amount of 0 to 15%, the compound of general formula (XI) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (XII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 10%, the compound of general formula (XIII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 20%, the compound of general formula (XIV) is contained in an amount of 2 to 15%, the compound of general formula (XV) is contained in an amount of 2 to 15%, the compound of general formula (XVI) is contained in an amount of 0 to 30%, and the compound of general formula (XVII) is contained in an amount of 0 to 15%.
